King’s Awards Honorary Doctorate to Head of State

The Council of King’s College London has decided to confer an honorary doctorate of Laws on His Excellency Mr Shimon Peres, President of Israel and Nobel Laureate, on the occasion of his visit to the United Kingdom in November 2008.

The honorary doctorate was presented to Mr Peres by The Marquess of Douro, Chairman, King's College London Council at the Mansion House, London today (18 November 2008).

The honorary doctorate is in recognition of the efforts of Mr Peres to find a peaceful solution to conflicts in the Middle East, which has led to him being awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

The College has a strong interest and expertise in Middle East affairs, notably in the Department of War Studies, and earlier this year launched the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR), an innovative initiative in this area in which Arab and Israeli academic institutions are openly collaborating. ICSR is the product of a unique partnership which brings together King's College London, the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya in Israel, the Regional Centre on Conflict Prevention, Amman and the University of Pennsylvania.
