Advice for Tuesday 3 February (posted at 07.45 on 3 February)

The current advice to staff and students for Tuesday 3 February is that the College will be open and return to normal operations as far as possible over the course of the day. 

 
02 Feb 2009Snow update: 2-3 February
Due to continued disruption caused by heavy snow falls, there have been no classes on Monday 2 February and if there are continuing severe disruptions to transport, at this stage there will be no classes on Tuesday 3 February.

01 Feb 2009STATEMENT RE STUDENT PROTEST
The occupation of a lecture theatre at the Strand campus by a number of students regarding their views on recent conflict in the Middle East has now concluded.  Throughout the occupation the College authorities and the occupying students have been in regular and constructive dialogue about the students’ concerns.

The Medical Research Council is working with King’s and four other universities in the UK to pilot a scheme set up to support translational research projects at these institutions. The aim is to drive forward the process of translating scientific discoveries into practice.

The Social Care Workforce Research Unit at King’s is involved with a major initiative launched today which aims to inform government policy and practice, and find solutions to bring vulnerable homeless people in from the margins of society.

The first five winners of a new scheme to honour King’s College London’s most distinguished study abroad students in the arts, humanities and social sciences were presented with their certificates at a ceremony held yesterday.

Dr Paula Risikko, Finland’s Minister of Health & Social Services delivered the annual David Hobman Lecture of the Institute of Gerontology and Age Concern England, at King’s this week. The lecture outlined the new framework for high-quality care and services for older people, introduced in Finland last year.
26 Jan 200910m prisoners in the world
More than 9.8 million people are held in penal institutions throughout the world, according to the latest edition of the World Prison Population List published today (Monday 26 January) by the International Centre for Prison Studies at King’s College London. This is an increase of 300,000 since the previous edition two years ago. If prisoners in ‘administrative detention’ in China are included the total is over 10.6 million.

Researchers from the Thames Cancer Registry at King’s College London have found, in a study published in the British Journal of Cancer, that a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer, the stage at which it is diagnosed, and the following treatment, can be influenced by ethnic background.
21 Jan 2009Global mental health discrimination rife
Research from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s published by The Lancet today looks at the global pattern of experienced and anticipated discrimination against people with schizophrenia. In the 27 countries researched, negative experienced discrimination is reported by 95 per cent of the participants.

Professor Glyn Davis, Vice-Chancellor, University of Melbourne, delivered the 2008-9 Menzies Annual lecture at King’s last night. In his speech he discussed that universities in the English-speaking world dominate international league tables and retain enormous advantages but many are also vulnerable to competition from abroad.

Faraz Mujtaba, a 19-year-old Computer Science student at King’s, will be among a select number of special guests in Washington DC today that will witness the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America.

The King’s College London Department of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation has recently been awarded World Health Organisation (WHO) accreditation and has been named a WHO Collaborating Centre for its research, education and clinical care development in palliative care.
