King's has an enjoyed an outstanding year of accomplishment and achievement across all Schools of the College and in range of different areas, including: funding, research projects, high-profile visitors, rising rankings, prestigious awards and student success.
19 Dec 2006Disruption of IT services 27-30 December
Some essential work on the College's IT machine room is to take place over the Christmas period. Although it is regrettable that this will necessitate the closure of systems for three days, it is hoped that, by doing this work at this time of year, relatively few members of the College will be affected.
19 Dec 2006C4 programme examines agoraphobia
Channel 4's The House of Agoraphobics on tonight (Tuesday 19 December) and tomorrow, is the work of anxiety expert Professor Paul Salkovskis, from the Institute of Psychiatry and his team from the South London & Maudsley Foundation Trust. It follows his groundbreaking programme The House of Obsessive Compulsives shown last year.
11 Dec 2006Company launched promoting genetic research
London Genetics, a specialist agency created to facilitate partnerships between industry and academic centres of excellence in genetics and genomics-based research across London, was launched on the 11 December at the Genesis meeting (the UK's largest biotechnology networking conference).
14 Dec 2006King's joins UK global elite
In a major new initiative announced yesterday, the Government launched a ‘Global Medical Excellence Cluster' at 10 Downing Street, attended by the Principal, Professor Rick Trainor and Professor Robert Lechler, Vice Principal (Health). Other members of this group include Imperial College, UCL, Oxford and Cambridge, as well as NHS partners and leading pharmaceutical companies.

King's has been successful in three joint bids with its partner NHS Trusts for Department of Health Research Centres of Excellence. The awards were recently announced by the Department of Health as part of its Best Research for Best Health initiative.
11 Dec 2006Major trial of peanut allergies in infants
King's College London scientists working with clinicians at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust are embarking on a major clinical trial into peanut allergy in children. The £5 million 7 year study involving 480 infants will explore whether or not early exposure to peanuts can reduce the risk of developing an allergy to peanuts.

Changes in the law that were supposed to make it easier to convict men of rape might not result in more convictions in cases in which the woman was drunk, according to new research from King's funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
06 Dec 2006Biological brain differences in criminal psychopaths
Researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's have identified that the way in which the brain processes other people's emotions could be one reason why criminal psychopaths do not care about others. Their findings are published in a new study in The British Journal of Psychiatry.
04 Dec 2006Results of international trial of diabetes drugs
Professor Giancarlo Viberti of King's has announced today (4 December) the results of a major international clinical trial comparing the efficacy of three drugs currently being used to treat Type 2 diabetes. The findings show that the most expensive drug, rosiglitazone, slowed the progression of the disease longer than the other drugs, metformin and glyburide.

Simon Lygo-Baker has been appointed Acting Director of the King's Institute for Learning and Teaching with the departure of Professor Gill Nicholls to the University of Durham.

The International Olympic Committee accredited Drug Control Centre at King's College London will undertake all the drug testing of athletes for the 15th Asian Games, which begin today, Friday 1 December in the capital city of Qatar, Doha.
30 Nov 2006Asian radio comes live from King's
BBC Asian Network Radio will be broadcasting live from King's all day today (Thursday 30 November) from the King's College London Students' Union's Waterfront Bar. There will be interviews and discussions with students and staff, plus quizzes, film reviews and live music in the evening.
28 Nov 2006Principal elected UUK President for 2007-9
Universities UK have announced that Professor Rick Trainor, Principal of King's College London, will be the next President of Universities UK. He will succeed Professor Drummond Bone (Vice-Chancellor, University of Liverpool) on 1 August 2007 and will hold the post of President for the two academic years 2007/8 and 2008/9.
24 Nov 2006'Hospital Doctor' Award for King's Professor
Professor Peter Braude and the Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) team from King's and Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust have won the Innovations category of the Hospital Doctor Awards. They were chosen for their pioneering work in PGD for serious genetic disorders.
