Facilities

Laboratories

We have new refurbished laboratories including: Plasma Etcher, 3D Fabricator, Argon Ion Beam Miller, Optical Microscopy with Micro-Hardness testing; Image Analysis Comprehensive materials preparation and metallographic facilities; Heat treatment ovens to 1600C; Two Litre, Tilting Casting Furnace (to 1200C); Combined thermal cycling and vibration testing chamber, Mechanical testing (Tensile, Impact and Hardness) and analysis equipment;PolyLab- Polymer component manufacture and testing unit; TallySurf and TallyRond metrology equipment.; Photographic facility (Digital and Wet processing); electronics assembly equipment including flip chip placer.

Biomaterials

Reciprocal links with the King's Dental Institute Biomaterials Group

Microscopy

Full access to a supported suite of electron microscopes in the King's new Centre for Ultrastructural Imaging . Access to an atomic force microscope (AFM) in ECLAT.

Parallel Computing

The School of Natural & Mathematical Sciences has established with SRIF funding a high-performance computing server farm (total cost £ 2M) to support computer modelling research, containing Linux clusters designed for parallel processing with a total capacity of 3,000 cores and performance of 20 teraflops, with dedicated in-house technical support.

Access to Materials Research Equipment

The Group has ready access to a "triple-beam" focussed ion-beam FIB microscope.
