King's College London has been awarded a grant from the Leverhulme Trust to support the research of Professor Fred Diamond, a member of the Number Theory group. The Leverhulme Trust was established at the wish of William Hesketh Lever in 1925 and makes awards for the support of research and education across all disciplines.
The focus of Professor Diamond's research is the Langlands programme, which conjectures a deep structural relationship between objects from number theory (coming from solutions of polynomial equations), and objects from representation theory (coming from symmetries with respect to matrix groups).
The grant of £113,000 from the Leverhulme Trust is for a research project on "Langlands correspondences for GL(2) in finite characteristic," and includes funding for a PhD studentship.
