Outreach

Outreach

The physics department at King's College London has an active outreach committee, which aims to foster interest in science and physics in the general public, and in particular to foster such interest in school-age students. The resources on this page are intended to help teachers and prospective students learn more about what kind of research is done in the physics department at King's, what the most exciting areas of current research in physics are, and where a career in physics can take you.

As part of its outreach, the Physics department at KCL has launched a Cosmic Ray Project  which aims to place cosmic ray detectors in local schools and teach school children about some of the physics involved in cosmic ray production and detection. Please see the link or contact Professor Alan Michette (alan.michette@kcl.ac.uk) for more information.

The department is able to offer guided tours of some of the research laboratories. These will give students the opportunity to see how and where research is done, and funded. The students will have the opportunity to observe a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscope in a research setting. For more information or to arrange a tour please contact Mr David Parker (david.j.parker@kcl.ac.uk).

The KCL physics department also has several talks available from members of the department. If your school is interested in arranging a lecture to be held at KCL (free of charge) on one of these topics, or you are interested in receiving email notifications when a lecture is taking place, please contact Dr Malcolm Fairbairn (malcolm.fairbairn@kcl.ac.uk).

From Maxwell to Higgs - a public lecture by John Ellis will take place at King's on the 14th March 2012 at 1800.  Further details are available here.
