National Student Survey 2012 - now open!
The National Student Survey (NSS) is an annual survey of undergraduates across the UK. It is commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and is conducted by an independent body, Ipsos-Mori.
The Survey consists of 23 questions grouped into a number of categories with space at the end for free text comments. All responses are anonymised
Students studying subjects funded by the NHS are also asked additional questions about their practice placements.
The College and the King’s College London Student Union (KCLSU) fully support the NSS; we strongly encourage students to complete it. This is an important opportunity for you to reflect upon and evaluate your experiences during your time at university and to give constructive feedback on what could be improved in future.
NSS 2011 Results
What were last year’s results?
We received a 75% response rate to the 2011 NSS, which was an improvement on the 2010 response rate. Overall student satisfaction in pre-registration nursing was 72% and satisfaction in pre-registration midwifery was 74%.
The quality of teaching was rated highly by both nursing and midwifery students and in particular, 89% of nursing students found that staff were enthusiastic about what they were teaching. Students were also satisfied with the learning resources on offer, with 88% satisfaction among nursing students and 90% satisfaction among midwifery students.
Assessment & feedback and organisation & management were two key areas that showed room for improvement and the School’s 2011 student experience action plan has focussed on addressing the issues that were highlighted.
What did last year’s students say and what actions has the school taken as a result?
“There are some incredible teachers on the course, who have relevant experience and are inspiring”
“I have been impressed at how some lecturers go out of their way to help students who may be struggling”
“The course has made me really appreciate midwifery”
“Great facilities, interesting topics, and very good place to study”
“Sometimes the timetable is poorly organised e.g. overlaps in students' schedules.”
- We’ve recruited a new member of staff in the student services centre to support timetabling across all our programmes.
“Results take a lengthy amount of time to be released.”
- We have set clear “hand in” and “hand back” dates so you know exactly when to expect feedback on your work. All grades will be given back within four weeks of you handing in your assessments. From 2012, we will be releasing raw marks within four weeks.
“I do not feel enough emphasis is placed on supporting students.”
- Personal tutors will be meeting with all second and third year students to discuss their progress so far and to begin developing plans for their careers.
“The placements are too short and there needs to be more anatomy and physiology.”
- We’re working with all our placement providers to improve clinical placements for students in all years.
How can I participate in the NSS 2012?
The survey opened on Monday 16 January 2012. If you are a final year undergraduate nursing or midwifery student on a BSc or DipHE programme at the School, you are eligible to complete the survey.
All eligible students will receive an email invitation from Ipsos-Mori to participate and complete the survey online.

The seminars will be held as follows:
