Literacy and numeracy tests
On your Selection Day, you will be asked to complete two short tests in literacy and numeracy. The tests take 20 minutes each. Calculators are permitted for the numeracy test and will be provided on the day.
To help prepare you for these assessments we have provided some guidance notes and example tests below.
For help and advice, also visit the dedicated BBC web page.
Some of these questions may appear rather basic. However, the UK Nursing & Midwifery Council have set minimum standards in numeracy and national survey research shows that most adults in the UK have relatively poor maths skills irrespective of highest qualification.
It is therefore essential that candidates demonstrate a minimum threshold score on the Selection Day to progress to interview stage.
Our aim is to provide all candidates with the opportunity to give their best performance on the Selection Day. If you anticipate some difficulty with the numeracy screening assessment, you may find this website helpful:

The literacy test on the Selection Day will assess your spelling, grammar, handwriting and flow of ideas. Whilst some of the literacy activities may appear rather basic, many adults in the UK have problems with spelling, punctuation and grammar, despite holding intermediate and high level qualifications. It is therefore essential that candidates demonstrate a minimum level of ability in literacy.
