Continuity of midwifery care is important, but we would like to know more about the best way to make it happen and the effects that it has. We have set up three community-based midwifery group practices where each woman will have direct access to her own midwife throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. We are looking at the best way to provide this service from the viewpoint of women and midwives and comparing the experiences and outcomes for mothers, babies and health staff with those delivering and receiving standard care.
