INTRODUCTION
The Clinical Neuroscience Department is an internationally recognised centre of both research and teaching excellence that comprises of clinicians and scientists dedicated to improving the care of people with neurological disorders.
Hosting the Medical Research Council's Centre for Neurodegeneration Research and London Neurodegenerative Disease Brain Bank, we are exploring the causes of and cure for neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's, fronto-temporal dementia, Parkinson's and Motor Neuron Disease.
We have a strong research team studying epilepsy, exploring research across a spectrum from laboratory to bedside; and we have research in stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, with an emphasis on prevention and acute intervention to enhance repair.
We are closely linked to the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at King's College Hospital, one of the largest neurological centres in the UK, serving around four million people, as well as Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals. With King's Health Partners we run a successful programme of clinical trials in liaison with commercial pharmaceutical companies.
INDUCTION & TRAINING
There is a full induction for new graduate students on commencing their studies.
FACILITIES
Our current research facilities will be greatly enhanced with the opening of the Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute in 2013. This will provide cutting-edge technology for 250 researchers and students. We are driving research that will translate molecular discoveries made in the laboratory into therapies for our patients.
The IoP shares the same site as the world famous Maudsley Hospital, which is part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) - one of the largest mental health providers in Europe. King’s is committed to translational research and is proud to be the only university in the country to host three National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) and six MRC centres. At the IoP we partner with SLaM to host the only specialist BRC for Mental Health in the UK working towards better treatment, earlier diagnosis and individualised healthcare. Students also have access to the largest library in Europe dedicated to psychiatry and related disciplines.
FUNDING
The Neurodegeneration IRG generally has three MRC-funded studentships each year, as well as a number of studentships funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Alzheimer's Research Trust and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
