WHY STUDY HISTORY?

History is the study of human diversity. History students are driven by their curiosity about the way people did things differently in the past. No other subject offers so many diverse opportunities for the study of human societies from high politics to popular culture, the study of a single place on a microscopically small scale to global economic trends. History does not allow us to predict the future; nor does it offer comfortable truths about who we are now. But it does teach us that every human act can be rationally understood, and in doing so encourages respect for the dignity of individual lives in the past.

Covering such a diverse range of subject matter, studying history allows students to develop vital skills for both a successful career and fulfilled life. Students learn to analyse texts, images and objects, to critique, and most importantly make their own, arguments. Studying history encourages independent thinking. Every aspect of the King's history degree is designed to encourage students to think for themselves and develop their own views about the past.
