Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies

I'm a first year PhD student in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, investigating contemporary Venezuelan fiction in its socio-political context. This means I spend a lot of time happily reading novels, while also learning about contemporary Venezuelan society and politics from books, journals, conferences and even Twitter.

Finding the right supervisor is key, as they can make or break your PhD, so the chance to work with Professor Catherine Boyle, one of the leading British academics in the field, was the deciding factor for me in choosing King's.

Since starting my PhD, I have been lucky enough to become part of a dynamic department, renowned for its research excellence, surrounded by inspiring academics whose interests and enthusiasm compliment my desire to learn about the vast array of topics covered within our field. The weekly seminars delivered by staff, students or outside speakers are a highlight of doctoral study here, as well as being able to audit MA classes (I highly recommend the Boom & Bust: Latin American Fiction in English Translation module).

With the many other institutions and universities nearby (Canning House, UCL, LSE...), there is always something to attend, which is great for both your social life and for your research! I have also really appreciated the possibility to participate in other interdisciplinary research projects which broaden my research skills and introduce me to people beyond my department. King's reputation, contacts, support for researchers and opportunities to widen my knowledge will all be essential when it comes to applying for academic jobs post-PhD.

You can find out more about what it's like to be a PhD student at King's by reading Katie's blog.

Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies

Having studied at King’s at undergraduate and master’s level, I knew that there was only one choice of university for me when I was applying for my PhD. The ‘SPLAS’ – Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies – department staff are always friendly and supportive, as well as being incredibly knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects.

My supervisor, Catherine Boyle, is a perfect example of this. With her help, I was able to win an AHRC scholarship for both my MA and my PhD, allowing me to focus on my research and not how I would fund it. She is a very experienced tutor who knows how to get the best out of her students, and this gives me the confidence to explore and try out new ideas, knowing that she will be there to guide me and inspire me whenever I need support.

But other aspects of King’s are equally important. For example, there is a weekly seminar led by other PhD students of the department, which allows us to feel a sense of community as a student body and to understand each other’s work, as well as the opportunity to present our own ideas in a friendly and informal space.

There are also seminars led by department staff and staff of other departments, and regular events, such as the Arts and Humanities Festival, all of which provide inspiration and help to broaden our horizons. We are also very well-situated, with easy access to Senate House Library and the British Library, as well as Canning House, international embassies and museums.

I enjoy the wide breadth of options that my course gives me in terms of area interests. I quite enjoy the Literature side of the degree, so I am able to choose Literature modules and tailor my degree according to what I enjoy. My teachers have definitely been an important part of my degree, they are all dedicated and always happy to help.

I chose King's primarily because I liked the modules that the Spanish Department were offering. Also, the environment was very student friendly and energetic - there is always something to do for everyone! My department in particular is quite small, so you get to know everyone studying in the same department.

It is great that King's is so central to London as well because there are endless opportunities and it is impossible to get bored. The best part of my experience at King's has to be my year abroad. As a part of my degree, I was able to spend a year studying in a university at Spain. I went to the south of Spain, and was able to not only have an amazing time, but learn some of the most valuable skills that I will carry on to the rest of my life. It was also a great opportunity to meet lots of new people, travel and experience things that are not necessarily at your reach living at home.

I am currently part of the Widening Participation Student Ambassador Scheme, whose main focus at the moment is K+, a scheme run for year 12 and 13 students. It is great being part of WP because as a Student Ambassador, they do give you a lot of responsibility and you carry out a lot of roles that are crucial to the actual running of K+. I am certain that I will leave King's with a lot of useful skills that I can use in the world of work.

When choosing where to study for my PhD the excellent reputation of King’s and the Spanish Portuguese and Latin American Studies Department strongly influenced my decision. I wanted to carry out my research in a varied, vibrant and challenging academic environment as I knew that this would create a wealth of opportunities both during my studies and in the future when applying for academic roles.

The first two weeks of my PhD coincided with the Arts and Humanities festival which gave me the opportunity to engage with current research and projects in other academic departments and to meet other graduate students. King’s has a diverse graduate community and exchanging ideas with other researchers has been an eye-opening experience. My research focuses on the translation of plays for performance as a creative process which allows for cross-cultural exchange.

The SPLAS department has an AHRC-funded project, Out of the Wings, which is about theatre translation, as well as seminars, teaching and leading academics working on the theme of Spanish and Spanish-American theatre, all of which make it a unique and exciting place to study. I made contact with my supervisor before I applied to King’s and her advice on my research proposal was invaluable.

I also applied for funding via the King’s Graduate School and was awarded a King’s-AHRC Doctoral Studentship which has allowed me to study full time for my PhD. King’s has partnerships with academic institutions worldwide: next year I intend to study at a partner university in order to gain a wider perspective on my research topic.

My studies here thus far have been academically both challenging and stimulating. I chose King's due to its incredible location in the heart of London, its reputation for academic excellence, and from a desire to learn from experts in my field of study. In addition, the department has historic roots in the early development of Hispanic and Lusophone studies as an academic discipline, so its long tradition in this field was a definite draw for me.

Broadly, my area of interest is twentieth century Latin American literature and sociopolitical history, and more specifically, I am hoping to focus my research on relationships between gender and revolutionary movements in Latin American nations in the mid to late twentieth century. The lecturers in the department demonstrate and model their own passion in this area on a daily basis, and collectively possess expertise in a wide range of topics in the discipline, which is reflected in the variety and depth of modules offered.

Outside of my department, I've also taken advantage of the Modern Language Centre evening classes at the great student rate to brush up on my Spanish, and generally, the ease of access to a number of University of London institutions and buildings in the city has been very valuable. In sum, I could not be happier with my graduate experience at King's, and the passion and academic excellence of my department has inspired me to want to pursue academic study and research at the PhD level in the near future.

Choosing to come to King's to study German and Spanish was one of the best decisions of my life. Both courses are very unique as they allow me to fully develop my language skills and learn about culture, linguistics and history. The wide range of modules along with the friendliness of classmates and staff has made my first year at King's really enjoyable.

Coming from a small town in Scotland, studying in London was a very big step for me, but one I do not regret. London has provided me with amazing opportunities ranging from going to see German and Spanish plays to finding a part time job which deals with foreign tourists. King's student union is also by far the best in London; I have performed in a theatre production, have joined the orchestra and am a member of the German Society.

The Strand Campus is like a microcosm of London; it is always busy and the café is always buzzing. This year I live in Inter-collegiate Halls of the University of London which is situated near King's Cross, just a 25 minute walk to the Strand.

I am happy that I chose to study at King's as I believe that this prestigious university will help me make long lasting friendships, boost my employment prospects, and prepare me for a successful future.

I came to King’s in 2010, after spending my first year at a different university that I discovered did not suit me. The German Department welcomed me with open arms and I always knew where I stood with regards to my BA in German and Hispanic Studies. During my time at King’s, I have been able to study topics as varied as linguistics, Catalan, literature, history, politics and film.

The pastoral care here is second to none; the members of academic staff are always willing to help where they can and are understanding of even the most unfortunate situations. I have had a hard time during my time at university due to family and health issues but have always felt incredibly well-supported.

The year I spent abroad was brilliant. I worked as a translator at a social media company in Berlin and taught English at a secondary school in Madrid. The job in Berlin made me sure that life in an office is not for me(!), but I gained valuable experience as a translator and team worker, working in one of the newest types of business. My students in Madrid were not from the most privileged areas and often didn’t see the point in learning English, which reminded me a lot of my own language classes at school in the East Midlands. Finding something that did interest them was a challenge but when we found it, it led to the most interesting classes. It was an amazing, unforgettable experience.

Following that experience, I have decided to pursue a career in teaching. Due to my love of all things German, my aim is to move to Germany to do this. I will teach English and Spanish or English and French in secondary schools. This will require further study either in the UK or in Germany but I will be putting that off for a year. I have been offered a job in Australia working with customers in German- and Spanish-speaking countries and feel that it’s right for me to take a break from academia for a while - it’ll still be there when I get back. My languages degree from King’s has already led me around the world to do so many different things and I’ve not even finished it yet!

I happened across King’s Prospectus by chance at the end of a difficult UCAS application, quickly realising that King’s was highly regarded for the languages I wanted to study; and with its location in London, on the Strand, would provide a good all-round experience with a healthy balance of work and play.

Over the past 3 years I have had access to more opportunities and met more fantastic people in more fantastic places than ever anticipated. My Year Abroad alone saw me taking summer language courses thanks to scholarship opportunities in Portugal and Germany, a semester as an Erasmus Student in Vienna, six months studying in Brazil and a quick trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina while I was on the continent.

This year I am President of the KCLSU Brazilian & Portuguese Society which I use as an excuse to get out of the library and to meet new people – Brazilian, Portuguese or otherwise; putting my Portuguese to good use at any one of the events, bars, and restaurants around town.

I chose King’s because of its great international reputation and central London location. My campus is on the Strand, right next to the river, which makes for stunning views and allows you to get to most places very easily on foot or by public transport. Although it doesn’t have a traditional campus feel, there is no denying the buzz you get from being in the centre of London and being right next to the Thames, theatreland and Somerset House, which hosts London fashion week, gigs and events throughout the year and an ice rink in Winter.

The compulsory year abroad attracted me to the BA Hispanic Studies course, as I think it’s an essential part of any good language degree, and I found the choice and variety of modules relating to Spain and Latin America really appealing.

I am a Student Ambassador and Telephone Fundraiser as well as a member of All the King’s Men (the male a capella singing group) and KCL Radio where I present my own music show “Pick ‘n’ Mix”. My highlights at King’s so far have to be going on a US East Coast tour with All the King’s Men and being at the Student Radio Awards with KCL Radio when we won Best Live Event/Broadcast for our coverage of Varsity 2011!

After my degree I plan on working within the Media and Creative industries. I’m confident that the skills I’m developing within my degree will help me stand out and effectively communicate and express myself within such competitive markets. I also hope that the ability to speak Spanish and Catalan (which I’m also learning) will allow me to work internationally.

'I chose King's because of its brilliant reputation and central London location, and it has lived up to my expectations. The tutors are really knowledgeable and often very well published, and nothing can compare to being a student in London; there is always so much going on!

Within King's, I am involved in the dance society, and I run a charity called TinTin, which is part of SIFE and is working to provide waterproof roofs made from recycled drink cans to people living in cardboard houses in rubbish dumps in the Philippines. I also work as a Student Ambassador, which is the ideal student job because it is flexible and I get paid for the time I put in! The Careers Service has been incredibly useful in helping me to explore my options for the future, and the skills I am learning from my course will undoubtedly help me to achieve success in either of these areas.

I will be spending my third year in Spain or South America to improve my Spanish and I am sure that this is going to be a fantastic experience!'

'King's was my first choice for university because when I visited I liked the atmosphere; including the area, the teachers and the people that I met. It's been a great experience so far, and I already have some good memories of living in halls of residence and my lectures, and I'm now looking forward to my year abroad in Spain.

King's offers so many different discussions, speeches and societies to get involved with that it's hard to choose! This year I'm mentoring children as part of the YELP society, I'm a member of SIFE Seeds of Hope, and a member of the Gospel Society. In the future I would like to work for a charity, preferably Latin America or Africa, and I'm planning to do a master's degree in Development Studies or a similar field.'

I chose to come to King’s because of its excellent academic reputation and its location right at the heart of London, which I believe to be the best city in the world. The capital has an amazing energy that you just will not find anywhere else in the UK and there’s always something to do at a student-friendly price.

King’s has connections with some of the world’s best universities in destinations as exotic as the Caribbean, and studying abroad for a year was the best part of my degree. I split the year between France and Portugal, and found myself not only studying but working and volunteering in both languages. The funding I was given to go abroad stretched to allow me to travel throughout the countries and I spent a great deal of time studying on the beach instead of in a library!

I have been involved in three societies throughout my time at university, allowing me to play sport, practise my Portuguese and volunteer with St John Ambulance. My time at King’s has been varied, challenging and great fun, and I know the opportunities I took advantage of here will continue to benefit me long after graduation.

'As an international student, I was impressed with everything that King's could offer me. The student body is very diverse and accurately represents the cultural mix that one would expect from a London university.

The Department of Portuguese & Brazilian Studies has a remarkable reputation and its tradition enables students to have access to original documents which helped shape the modern Portuguese speaking world. The Department has been able to bring together some of the most respected lecturers and researchers in the field of Portuguese & Brazilian Studies thus allowing us to learn directly from the authors of textbooks.

The Strand Campus has some of the best installations in London. Apart from the excellent location, it also benefits from its modern classrooms with extensive audio/visual appliances as well as access to the internet in every building.

As one of the cultural capitals in Europe, it is impossible to get bored in London! The theatre district is just minutes away from the Strand Campus and the area also has a very lively nightlife. Several of the most famous tourist attractions are nearby as well.'
