Although most graduates from this programme will choose to secure their first post as a qualified Environmental Health Practitioner in a local authority environmental health department working as an enforcement officer, some will decide thereafter to explore opportunities to work in a central government department (e.g. the Department of Health) or government agency (e.g. the Food Standards Agency) or in the health service. In addition, graduates in Environmental Health can be found working in private industry, consultancies, the law and the armed forces. Through further post-graduate study opportunities exist to develop a career path to the highest echelons of local government management, whilst those who choose to develop their careers in the broader field of public health can now aspire to posts at consultant level as directors of public health with primary care trusts through the ‘general specialist’ pathway.
