German & Comparative Literature

The MRes in German & Comparative Literature is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) research-based Masters degree designed for students who wish to study German literature within a broader international context.

Students on the programme take modules totalling 180 credits. These include two core modules worth 20 credits each on the practice and theory of Comparative Literature, taught successively in the first and second semesters. A supervised 25,000-word dissertation worth 120 credits (20,000 word dissertation plus 5,000 word preparatory critical survey) on a comparative topic combining German and European literature is normally completed in the summer. In addition, students choose one further optional module totalling 20 credits, taught over one semester. We usually recommend that this is the Guided Reading and Research module, where you will work closely with a member of staff on a topic related to their research specialism of your choosing.
