PURPOSE
Orthodontics is for dentists on a three-year Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) - approved training programme in orthodontics preparing for the MOrth examination of one of the Surgical Royal Colleges, or the Maltese equivalent. To provide a sound academic basis for orthodontic practice.

Academic and practical teaching that covers: all aspects of orthodontics diagnosis and care including normal development; growth modification; fixed, functional and retaining applicances and the biological principles of orthodontic tooth movement as well as multidisciplinary treatment involving orthognathic surgery and restorative dentistry. Participation in the related research programmes, including: laboratory materials investigations; clinical studies and biological investigations. Complies with the principles of Erasmus and supports the European Union directives on specialisation in orthodontics. For UK candidates, prepares you for the MOrth of one of the Royal Surgical Colleges.
EXTRA PROGRAMME INFORMATION
As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment. If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before term begins. All offers of a place on a programme are made subject to a satisfactory criminal conviction disclosure. If you are from overseas or have never lived in the UK before, you should contact the relevant authorities in your home country to arrange for the equivalent check to be conducted and/or a certificate of good conduct to be issued.

FORMAT AND ASSESSMENT
Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, plus an additional 300 credits of non-modular supervised clinical work and, for KCL Candidates, a further 60 credits compromising the Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice are offered to those students whose academic progress is appropriate. Modules are grouped into three distinct types: 1) Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of orthodontics assessed by written examination; 2) One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, practical, or oral examinations; 3) One research module, involving the submission of a research project report including a literature review, with an oral examination.

At the end of the module you will be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge and understanding of the following areas which are relevant to the study of Orthodontics: Biomedical sciences; Applied Radiological science; Applied Materials science; Neuroscience; Pathology; Statistics; Scientific basis of orthodontics; Patient management; Applied Human disease; Restorative treatment planning; Research methodology; Professional responsibility. This 60 credit module provides students with a scientifically rigorous research experience through undertaking a piece of research work and writing a report of the findings including a relevant literature review and appropriate statistical analysis.At the end of the module you will be able to: Analyse both scientific and clinical data; Critically review the relevant scientific literature; Plan a research project; Understand how to apply statistical analyses; Carry out a research project; Understand the effect of experimental variables; Use information and communications technology; Devise and support arguments for oral health; Present your work both orally and in writing. ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
General entry advice
All applicants: a dental qualification plus at least two years post-qualification experience. EU applicants will normally need to satisfy any additional specialist training requirements. For UK applicants FDS, MFDS or MJDF is desirable.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Completed applications (which will normally consist of an online application form, both references, a transcript of previous degrees and a CV) will not be considered until after the deadline date (31st December). Candidates will then be shortlisted for interviews which will be held in February or March. If selected for interview, you should bring to interview a portfolio of clinical dentistry to demonstrate your clinical skills.

FUNDING
UK/EEA trainees appointed as specialist registrars will receive an SpR salary for each of the three years. Others are self-funded.

Aesthetic Dentistry MSc
I began my clinical career at King's as it provided me with a solid foundation in dentistry. The quality of teaching was to such a high standard that I believed it was only natural for me to seek further postgraduate education at this institution.
I chose the MSc Aesthetic Dentistry programme as it would allow me to increase my range of clinical ability, to be able to correctly diagnose aesthetic problems and be able to formulate treatment plans suitable for each patient's requirements. Satisfying patients with the most ethical aesthetic treatment modalities is something to be proud of.
The greatest advantage of this course is that I can apply lessons learnt to clinical practice whilst the programme is ongoing. In this way any difficulties encountered can be discussed and solutions created. Distance learning is the future!
