This programme is suitable for Maxillofacial Prosthetists , Technologists, and Prosthodontists who wish to develop their technical skills and would like to develop higher standards of clinical practice.

This innovative programme offers seven modules over three years through part time distance and e- learning training to obtain 180 credits at level 7 for an MSc.

 

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate extended knowledge, understanding and advanced skills in the treatment of patients who require prosthetic facial rehabilitation. It covers a broad range of treatments for replacement of missing hard and soft tissues using both traditional and advanced digital technologies. The course also includes a module on the psychological and social support required in facial rehabilitation, covering skills in communication, counselling and an appreciation of the psychosocial effects of surgical treatment. Through optional modules you can focus your study on prosthodontics, or psychology for maxillofacial prosthetics.

 

The mode of delivery is Distance Learning, which combines online and face-to-face components, enables Maxillofacial Prosthetists, Technologists and Prosthodontists to remain in clinical practice while training. This ensures no loss of income or work experience and establishes practice using skills learnt on the programme. The course has been designed to provide theory, support and discussion groups by online training using a dedicated virtual learning environment to provide access to content wherever students are in the world.

The Unit of Distance Learning consists of a team of highly experienced administrative and support staff dedicated to providing support to students. Combined with the use of a comprehensive online educational delivery system, this allows students to interact with staff and colleagues, to further enhance their learning experience.

 

Partial completion or early exit may result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.

 

Intensive Face-to-Face Course

 

To supplement your online teaching you will also receive hands-on clinical training at our training centres. Designated tutors are present to offer expert guidance to students on complex procedures and clinical skills. There are two compulsory face to face courses, which require attendance for seven days in year 1 and 10 days in year two. The training centre for 2012 is in Pune, India.

This Masters programme is assessed through a combination of assignments, written examinations, clinical case presentations and a dissertation. Upon enrolling, students must choose between two optional modules: Psychological and Social Issues in Head and Neck Cancer OR Oro-Facial Prosthodontics (if suitably qualified to undertake prosthodontic treatement). In the first two years, most modules within the programme are assessed by a combination of 60 per cent written examination and 40 per cent written assignments. Each year you will receive an assignment schedule to follow for the year and must complete two assignments from each module between January and August to be entered into the end of year exams. Exams can be taken in London or, for overseas students, at centres in the student's country of residence. The Report module is undertaken in the final year. Students will work towards a 10,000 word dissertation/project with an allocated supervisor which will be assessed 100 per cent on the basis of the report.


General entry advice

Completed applications (consisting of an online application form, two references, transcripts of previous qualifications and evidence of English Language score where required) will be considered on a "first come first served" basis according to the date of completion of the application. Early applications are strongly advised.

 

The initial decision will be to either confirm the offer of a place without an interview, invite you for an interview, hold your application for further consideration following the official closing date for applications, or to reject the application.

You should expect to receive this initial decision within six weeks of the date of submission of the completed application, although this may be slightly longer at peak periods near to the closing date. Applicants who are offered a place will have to provide original documentation of their previous qualifications, and pay a non-refundable deposit, before access to the online virtual learning environment will be given at the start of the course.

Applications received after the closing date will be held in reserve on a waiting list, in case there are vacancies or places become available.
