PURPOSE
For practitioners with minimum two years' general professional training wishing to specialise in periodontics. Part of an SAC-approved programme of specialist training for those who have a specialist training number (see entry requirements). For those not part of an SAC-approved programme of specialist training it provides relevant and appropriate education and training in periodontology with greater depth of knowledge and clinical skills than is required for general practice.

DESCRIPTION
The programme includes: the scientific basis of periodontal care; the relationship of other dental disciplines to periodontal care; diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with advanced periodontal disease involving multidisciplinary approaches and integrated treatment; the clinical treatment of patients with advanced periodontal disease; techniques for placement and restoration of dental implants in different clinical situations; aesthetics and contemporary surgical methods.

You will attend a core course in restorative dentistry which includes critical review of the literature, biometry, periodontology, prosthodontics and dental materials science. You will be required to carry out an investigation and to prepare a project report, which must include a survey of the relevant literature. Recent research projects include: smoking and periodontal health; periodontal microbiology and immunology; clinical trials of periodontal treatment and oral hygiene methods; behavioural factors in periodontology and periodontal relationships to systemic health.

EXTRA PROGRAMME INFORMATION
As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment. If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before term begins. All offers of a place on a programme are made subject to a satisfactory criminal conviction disclosure. If you are from overseas or have never lived in the UK before, you should contact the relevant authorities in your home country to arrange for the equivalent check to be conducted and/or a certificate of good conduct to be issued.

Student profiles

Periodontology MClinDent
I decided to apply to King's College London for my graduate course because of the friendly environment, access to good facilities and high level teaching standards that I experienced there during my undergraduate degree. The graduate course that I am studying is the MClinDent in Periodontology, which is a well-organised programme mainly based on the Guy's Campus, which is great. The students are really friendly and the many pubs and cafes surrounding the Campus make it a good place to meet up with colleagues.
The graduate MClinDent programme offered at King's can be studied full-time or part- time, which means that you can work whilst doing the course and enables dental graduates to fund their studies. The MClinDent programme is the graduate course you are required to complete if you wish to become specialists in your chosen field. After I complete my course, I hope to start my own specialist practice and I am sure the training I have received will allow me to achieve this. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to take their dental career to the next level.
