Population Neurology

DESCRIPTION
During 2006 Dr Leone Ridsdale completed a MRC Strategic Grant Project. Collaborators included Laura Goldstein, Myfanwy Morgan, and Paul McCrone. It focussed on reasons for referral of patients with primary headache to specialists, and factors affecting outcome. Results showed that only 2% of patients were referred to neurologists. Headache impact or disability was not greater in referred patients than in those managed by their GP. Referred patients linked more symptoms to their headache, were more worried and made anxious about it, and consulted more frequently.

A study in collaboration with Dr Martin Gulliford on a national dataset found that GPs were more likely to refer men with headache, whilst women were more likely to receive prescriptions.

A study funded by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity has trained GPs with special interest (GPwSI) in headache, and established a clinic at Princess Street Practice at the Elephant and Castle. Patients with headache are more satisfied with this than attending hospital clinics.

A Wellcome Trust funded trial comparing exercise, counselling, and usual care for chronic fatigue is nearly complete with 200 patients randomised.
