RESEARCH PROFILE
  • Number of academic staff: 22.
  • Number of research students: 48.
  • Examples of current research:
    • Mother-infant interaction in women with severe mental illness. On our in-patient Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) we not only treat mental illness in mothers but also support her relationship with her baby. We have examined the interactions between mothers with serious mental illness and their babies on admission to and on discharge from the MBU. Future research will see these mothers and their babies in the second year of life and assess the infant’s attachment style to the mother.
    • The Health of UK Armed Forces Personnel, A Cohort Study. This is a large, ongoing investigation of the physical and psychological health and well-being ofUK armed forces personnel.
    • The South London Diabetes (SOUL-D) Study. This prospective cohort study is assessing the association between depression and diabetes outcomes in people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
    • Neuroimaging and Depression. In a series of studies, members of the Department are examining regions in the brain which are affected by depression and how these regions change following treatment with antidepressant medication.
    • The neurobiological causes of mood disorders. Much of this work is carried out with patients at the National Affective Disorder Unit, part of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation’s Trust National Division. The team uses a variety of techniques to investigate neurobiological changes in mood disorders and to look at the role of hormones and the link between the brain and the immune system.
