RESEARCH DESCRIPTION
The Department of Management was ranked joint fifth of all UK management departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. With highly regarded and internationally recognised scholars and research groups, students are provided with a stimulating and friendly intellectual environment within which to undertake doctoral research. Very broadly, members of the Department undertake research in the areas of work, organisation and governance. Their research includes projects funded by the UK Research Councils, the EU IST Programmes and various UK Government Departments. Many of these projects involve close collaboration with academic partners and with public and private sector organisations in both the UK and abroad. The Department is part of the King's ESRC Doctoral Training Programme in the Social Sciences.

Research is built around a number of strategic research centres and groupings:

  • Human Resource Management & Employment Relations;
  • Accounting & Accountability;
  • International Business & Marketing;
  • Work, Interaction & Technology;
  • Public Services Management.

Groups are inclusive, encouraging cross-group membership, multidisciplinarity, and collaboration with members of the Department, others in the College as well scholars and practitioners based in academic institutions and private and public sector institutions both in the UK and abroad. Projects include both theoretically-driven as well as more applied research.

My research lies in the area of organisational change in the public services, especially in professionalized settings such as health care and universities. I am interested in New Public Management and post NPM narratives of public policy reforming and the changing roles of professionals and managers, including clinical/managerial hybrids. I have also worked on the implementation of Evidence Based Medicine.

I have recently completed a big study of health care networks and am currently working on the nature of management knowledge and knowledge mobilisation processes in health care in two projects funding by NIHR SDO. I have also published on the ‘Business School Business’ and have an interest in alternative organisational forms in the Business School field.

Student profiles

Management Research MPhil/PhD

King's presented a natural choice for my PhD studies. After completing an MSc in International Management at the university, I had come to know the academic staff in the Department of Management quite well. They are highly regarded and knowledgeable in their fields, but also approachable and supportive. This gave me the confidence that they would be able to provide me with excellent guidance and supervision for my PhD research. Indeed, my supervisors have always gone the extra mile when I needed quick support or hit an unexpected bump in the road.

Receiving a studentship, co-sponsored by the ESRC and the Graduate School, allows me to commit fully to the research and not have my focus diverted. At King's, I have found myself a friendly, yet engaging support network that makes me feel at home in the greater academic community. With all the support I receive at King's, I am confident that my PhD research will be a successful first step in my academic career.

I would encourage anyone considering King's for their graduate research to come onto campus, meet the staff, chat with us students and get a feel for the support available.
