SELECTION PROCEDURE

Academic qualifications and examination results play a large part in selection, but we try to be flexible and always take into account other musical and academic attainments based on information supplied by the candidate and the confidential referee. Our selection criteria favour students whose profile and interests match those of the Department. It is compulsory for applicants to send a copy of their most recent performance exam report for their first study instrument or voice to the Music departmental office once they have applied. Occasionally we may also ask you to send us samples of your written work. For a detailed list of the personal qualities, activities, and credentials other than examination results, which will increase your chances of being selected for the undergraduate Music programmes please consult the Music Department's webpage. The Department has many students from outside the UK and welcomes applications from international candidates.

1. Music never accepts transfer students. Those already on a degree course elsewhere should apply through UCAS in the usual way, and either request entry into year 1 or year 2.

2. Music no longer asks students to submit the examiner's report of their most recent examination in musical performance. Instead, the actual numerical score achieved should be given under the "qualifications" section of the UCAS form.

3. Music requires a strong grade 8 in the principal study by the time that places are confirmed in August, but understands that not all applicants will have achieved this at the time that they apply. By "strong" we mean, in general, a merit or distinction. We also require grade 5 piano. We have a preference for ABRSM over other exam boards because we consider their standards and types of assessment a closer fit with our first year course.

4. Music asks applicants or their referees to disclose the raw scores of all AS modules examined, even if the applicant plans not to "cash these in" but instead will resit one of more units. If the original scores are not disclosed, this will disadvantage the application.

5. In exceptional cases, where A-level music (or Higher Level Music in the IB) are not available to an applicant, Music will consider ABRSM grade 8 theory and practical as a substitute for A-level Music.

6. In making offers and assessing qualifications, Music assumes the following equivalences:

A-level grade A* = Pre-U D2 = IB HL 7

A-level grade A = Pre-U D3 = IB HL 6
