After a Foundation degree in IT, I decided to study Computer Science and applied at King’s because it’s one of the top-ranking colleges worldwide. At the open day staff and students were all extremely approachable and the environment was very nice, so I was truly delighted to be accepted onto a 4-year programme. A longer programme was ideal, as I sought to explore the field before deciding to study for a PhD.

During my course, I have been able to build very positive relationships with lecturers, staff, the Head of Department and my personal tutor. They have supported me in scholarship and internship applications, answered my questions and generally offered a positive environment to learn.

I am Student Representative within the Department and on the School Education Committee, a member of the leading field organisations (ACM, IEEE and BCS) and in the Editorial Panel of the IEEE newsletter. This year, I was selected to volunteer at SC11 (a leading conference in high performance computing), won an ACM-W scholarship, the King’s JP Morgan prize and the BCS Lovelace poster competition.

I work as a Data Management Developer and in the future want to participate in research and science-related computing projects, for which my degree constitutes an ideal foundation.

Living in London can be costly, so students should pay attention to the way they manage their budget. The college offers very good advice and literature on how to best manage your income and plan ahead. Students have access to a range of discounts in various shops, from stationary to clothing and the Oyster travel card. If you live centrally, then you may want to consider a bus pass rather than the tube pass or even cycling as this would save you a lot on your travel budget.

If you want to save money on rent, living a bit less centrally may help - college halls may also be an option, as well as sharing a flat with other friends or students. King’s offer some scholarships, so look out for them on the college website.
