NON ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Scholastic activities (Compulsory)
We look for applicants with an enthusiasm for History. We welcome applications from those who have begun to develop an ability to form independent opinions and arguments on historical subjects, and to criticise other points of view, identifying weaknesses in other arguments, for example on the basis of historical evidence and illogical argument. We seek applicants who have an ability to sustain an argument in a debate and respond to criticisms and possible objections in a reflective and rational manner. We look for applicants who demonstrate a willingness to think creatively about using evidence from a range of sources to make historical points, and who have an interest in making connections and drawing comparisons between different historical periods, places and problems. We also look for signs of width of applicant’s reading – especially reading that goes beyond scope of school syllabus (e.g. reading that extends beyond A level set texts).
Community activities
We look for applicants who have participated as fully as possible in school, college or community life, making the most of the opportunities available to them.
General activities/interests
We look for applicants who have participated in activities which demonstrate the candidate's enthusiasm and commitment to the study of history, such as participating in history-orientated clubs or debating teams, or the writing of history-based articles or web logs.
Paid or voluntary work
Although we do not require applicants to have been in paid or voluntary employment, we welcome applications from those who can demonstrate tenacity and an ability to prioritise by being employed in work alongside their studies.
