PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
King's is one of the few universities offering a BSc in Anatomy, Developmental & Human Biology. The programme provides an opportunity for students to explore and to integrate the biological and behavioural sciences, the aim being to appreciate how they contribute to our understanding of the evolution, structure, function, development and behaviour of our own species.

To achieve this aim, our degree programme involves study of the core biological and medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, evolution and developmental biology). You may also choose from a wide range of courses that reflect our teaching expertise, including neuroscience, cell biology, reproduction and human development.

In the final year there is an opportunity to carry out advanced experimental laboratory work in a field such as developmental neurobiology or reproductive neuroendocrinology. Anatomy, Developmental & Human Biology students should be able to communicate their knowledge and understanding; essays, including an extended formal report on laboratory or library projects, and seminars give practice in these skills.

ABOUT THE Department of Anatomy and Human Sciences

CAREERS
The career market for our graduates is buoyant, with an extraordinary range of final destinations, ranging from PhD and MSc programmes, management trainee programmes, scientific journalism and publishing, forensic science, and the scientific civil service as well as health service administration. The Anatomy, Developmental & Human Sciences degree also offers an excellent preparation for graduate entry into medicine or dentistry, and each year a substantial number of our graduates are accepted on to five-year or accelerated MBBS or BDS programmes. Recent graduates have found employment as…. • Administrator, Nuffield Hospital • Editorial post, Future Science Group • Graduate Intern, Grey London • Internship, Age UK • Marketing Executive, Solaris

TEACHING STYLE
A mixture of teaching styles is used, including lectures, tutorials and practical classes. Staff research strengths lie particularly in developmental biology and neuroscience, and this emphasis is reflected in our teaching.

STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMMES & ASSESSMENT
Our degree programme encourages students to explore and to integrate the biological and behavioural sciences. The aim is to appreciate how sciences contribute to our understanding of the evolution, structure, function, development and behaviour of our own species. To achieve this aim, our programme involves study of the core biological and medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, evolutionary and developmental biology). After studying the core subjects in the first year, students can opt for a wider range of options in the second and third years. Second-year compulsory subjects include Structural Basis of Human Function, a chance to learn human anatomy by dissection (an opportunity which is not available at all universities which teach anatomy, developmental and human biology, even those with medical schools). Students can also choose from a wide variety of optional modules. In the third year, students complete a compulsory library or experimental project, and choose from a further range of optional modules, dependent on the pathway selected.

LOCATION
Our modern, well-funded laboratories cater for the full range of programmes on offer. As a large multi-faculty university, we have excellent social and sporting facilities, but a key attraction is our central London location. Our three campuses along the River Thames are located in the cultural and social heart of the capital and offer our students the opportunity to explore art galleries, theatres, museums, markets, restaurants and cafés.

Currently, students study the following core modules. If there are optional modules available, a selection of current possibilities are also shown. King's reviews its optional modules on a regular basis in order to continue to offer innovative and exciting programmes, and this list is therefore subject to change. Please check here for updates or contact the School/department for further advice. All courses are 15 credits unless indicated otherwise.

Student profiles

Anatomy, Developmental & Human Biology BSc
I applied to King’s after attending the open day because it was the first University where I felt truly inspired and welcome. The combination of an attractive campus amidst the excitement of central London, alongside enthusiastic lecturers and a world-class reputation made it an obvious choice. Human Sciences appealed specifically as it provides a wide knowledge platform in the first year, followed by the freedom to tailor your studies to your personal interests. Additionally, King’s gives the rare opportunity to do human dissection and incorporate foreign language modules alongside scientific studies.

Importantly, King’s offers an extensive range of social clubs and activities. I spent the first two years in the University of London Air Squadron - few people can say they had the chance to learn to fly and talk to the Princess Royal while at University! There’s plenty to do in London too: from great nightlife, to being in a TV show audience, there’s something for any budget.

Last summer I was awarded a studentship, enabling me to work in one of the King’s research laboratories. Few Universities encourage students to take part in such innovative and clinically relevant research, and it has motivated me to apply to do a PhD.

Anatomy, Developmental & Human Biology BSc
'King's reputation for the sciences definitely precedes it. King's is a university that is well known for its academic successes and rates very highly in university league tables. King's also presented itself as a friendly university with a wide variety of sports clubs and societies, which appealed to me greatly. Everyone here at King's is really helpful. My lecturers and tutors are amazing. If I don't understand something they will go out of their way to ensure that I fully understand their answer to my question.'
