PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The interaction of people, ideas and institutions is central to shaping the outcomes of political processes and government decision-making at many levels: global, regional, national, and local. Accordingly, the BA in International Politics relates the study of politics to developing knowledge and understanding of the relations between government and society. Exploring those issues gives a central place to questions of political order and decision making.


The programme will equip students to think critically and independently about these issues and to develop the range of skills that will support their intellectual, vocational and personal development. Students will be able to gather, organise and deploy evidence, discriminate appropriately to synthesise relevant information, construct reasoned arguments and reflect on their own learning so as to be better equipped for life-long learning.




ABOUT THE Department of Political Economy

CAREERS
Students on both programmes acquire a skill-set that equips them to work in a policy development environment in governmental or NGO settings.

TEACHING STYLE
Sitting within the School of Social Science & Public Policy, the Department of Political Economy has an interdisciplinary, social science ethos that cultivates a highly stimulating intellectual environment attracting leading scholars. A research-led curriculum encourages critical analysis and debate on contemporary international political and policy issues. A variety of teaching methods are used on the programme. Most modules use lectures accompanied by small tutorial groups.

STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMMES & ASSESSMENT
The Department offers two related undergraduate programmes: the BA (Hons) in International Politics and the BA/BSc in Politics of the International Economy. The modules students take on both degrees will be assessed through a range of techniques including examinations, coursework and tutorial participation.

LOCATION
Teaching is based on the Strand Campus with all the facilities offered by the College easily available and the cultural attractions of the South Bank and Covent Garden on its doorstep. The library and computing facilities are readily accessible together with the opportunity to use the University of London library at Senate House.

International Politics BA

Having grown up in Iran and living in Canada, I decided to choose King’s and move to London because I was looking for a truly globally-orientated education. Studying in the centre of this exciting and vibrant city, I thought, would enable me to gain insight into international politics beyond my lecture halls. Not only has this proved to be true, but the diversity within my course has provided me with a rich and stimulating environment for a global understanding of international politics.

 

The staff are leading experts with very different backgrounds, enabling students to gain a holistic understanding of international politics. The students come from all around the world. Consequently, the variety of opinions and ideas that are exchanged in lectures and seminars creates a unique learning environment.

 

Life at King’s does not only involve academia for me. The energy and passion that studying at King’s has given me has motivated me to get involved in extra-curricular activities, namely representing international students at the Department of Political Economy and leading the KCL Politics Society as its President.

 

After graduation, I will leave King’s with many great memories of the friendly and fun student body and the kind and inspirational staff. The skills I will have acquired by the end of my degree will equip me for life.
