PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
The programme is designed for students who wish to study Mathematics at degree level, but also see their future in a managerial role especially in the finance sector. The mathematical element of the programme initially gives students a foundation in all branches of mathematics, for example algebra, analysis, statistics, geometry, probability and mathematical methods, but focuses more on topics of specific relevance to financial mathematics in the third year.

The Management topics constitute about a quarter of the programme, and include accounting, marketing, economics, and human resource management. During the first year all students follow a set course of modules, but in subsequent years there is more opportunity to choose topics, and therefore tailor the degree to suit your interests.

ABOUT THE Department of Mathematics

CAREERS
A degree in mathematics is one of the most flexible qualifications you can obtain, and as a result graduates are among the best paid and the least likely to be unemployed. Many mathematics graduates become statisticians, actuaries, scientists, accountants, and so on. More and more often they are also going into careers in life sciences or the City. Opportunities also exist in teaching, and there is a real demand for graduates in this area. Recent graduates have found employment as: • Actuarial Analyst, Deloitte • Graduates in the Fashion Industry scheme, lyle and scott • Teacher, Harris Academy • Accounting Associate, Ernst & Young • Financial Analyst, GE Healthcare • Mathematical Developer, Oakham • Audit Assistant, KPMG • Finance Assistant, Eden Finance • Management Consultant, Pricewaterhousecoopers • Project Assistant, HSBC • Qualify Management Technician, Pacific life Insurance • Systems Analyst, QBE

TEACHING STYLE
Teaching is predominantly by lectures, supplemented with tutorials and problem classes. Mathematics is not a spectator sport: to become a competent mathematician you must have a go at solving problems. Lecturers provide problem sheets, and if a problem defeats you, we hope and expect that you will ask for help.

STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMMES & ASSESSMENT
Our students are assessed using a combination of coursework and examinations depending on the module.

LOCATION
The central location of our department gives easy access to major libraries and many leading societies including the London Mathematical Society and the Royal Society.

Student profiles

Mathematics with Management & Finance BSc
I was looking for a University that had a prestigious reputation and at the same time offered me a modern and vibrant student life; King's was the perfect match.

Studying Mathematics at the Strand Campus is an amazing experience. Walking from the lecture theatre, passing the College's beautiful chapel and enjoying the amazing view over London at the Waterfront Bar, is an experience I am overwhelmed by again and again. King's central location in the heart of London, its many career fairs and my course form a great foundation for a career in Banking and Finance.

King's offers a huge variety of activities outside class. I am involved in the College's Ambassador Scheme and play on King's tennis team.

As an international student King's was especially appealing to me because the University offers much support for those coming from abroad. Whenever I have questions I can ask my personal tutor or advisers at The Compass for help. I also participated in King's 'International Welcome Event' prior to the academic start. I got to know many students from all over the world and experienced a fantastic start in London.

Mathematics with Management & Finance BSc
Deciding to study at King’s College London has been one of the best choices I have made academically. Choosing a university is a difficult decision but there were some aspects of King’s which helped my decision. It is a globally recognised university and studying in the capital has been an unforgettable experience. There are a wide variety of activities for everyone so life is nothing short of exciting when living here. I feel that over the past two years King’s has provided me with the vital skills and knowledge needed to join the working world.

Studying mathematics with management and finance has developed key skills and commercial awareness that employers look for in graduates. This, combined with support from the Careers Service, has enabled me to get involved in several workshops and courses which have helped me to shape my future. I would chose to study at King’s several times over, because I feel it provides you with the help and support you need at university.
Mathematics with Management & Finance BSc
My initial reasons for choosing King’s were its worldwide reputation and its excellent location at the heart of London. Having been here for over two years I can give many more reasons why King’s should be the choice for any student looking for a vibrant and active student life.

In providing a wide variety of student activities the university creates the chance to interact with a diverse range of students. The motivation and support from the lecturers and staff have spurred me on when I needed an extra push.

I particularly enjoy the core mathematical modules - the satisfaction of solving challenging problems is unparalleled. Simultaneously acquiring key business skills and commercial awareness through the management modules will help me pursue a career in Banking and Finance. The Career Service has provided me with valuable support along with access to career events and professional skills programmes that have added more value to my college years.

Besides academics, King’s has given me good opportunity to work for the community. I am part of a volunteer group helping to motivate disadvantaged secondary students and I was a part of the first year tutoring scheme which makes sure that the first year students have a smooth transition from college to university life. Overall I am glad to be at King’s and hope that I can use the skills and experience gained here in the future.
