PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The BSc Midwifery Studies programme aims to prepare students to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council statutory proficiencies required to register as an autonomous midwifery practitioner. It seeks to develop the knowledge, skills and professional values needed to provide safe, effective and individualised care that is sensitive and acceptable to women and their families. The programme emphasises the distinct role and responsibilities that midwives have within public health and inter-professional teams working in maternity services. There are opportunities to explore local, national and international contexts of maternal health and to undertake a free allocation elective in year 3.

The programme teaching and learning approaches utilises a blended learning approach comprised of lectures, seminars, structured reflection, student led presentations and group work, clinical skills simulation, e-learning and independent study. The assessment strategy includes formative and summative assessments such as unseen exams, multiple choice and observed structured clinical examinations, essays, projects, portfolios and clinical practice assessment.

During your first year you will gain insight into the history of the midwifery profession and the foundation of the current statutory framework for midwifery practice. In addition you will develop skills in information retrieval, interpretation and critique, in order to evaluate the reliability and validity of different types and levels of knowledge that underpin professional knowledge. You are introduced to biological and social science perspectives that inform midwifery practice and are provided with opportunities to consolidate a range of basic midwifery skills associated with 'normality' in reproductive health care.

In your second year you will continue to develop your understanding of the research process by exploring different methodological approaches to the generation of high quality evidence based care. You evaluate the specific contribution of the midwife within the multi professional team particularly in relation public health promotion strategies such as sexual and psychological health. In addition there are opportunities to explore a range of features that contribute to aspects of the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care through a continuity of care project. You will also consider different organisational aspects that influence maternity care and evaluate the impact that different care models have for perinatal and maternal care outcomes and client satisfaction. You are encouraged to reflect on case studies drawn from clinical practice and to develop a reflective approach to care particularly when reviewing complex midwifery and obstetric situations and common medical disorders encountered in childbearing women.

The emphasis in the final year is to prepare you for entry to the register and to develop your understanding of decision making processes in a variety of midwifery and obstetric scenarios. You will consolidate your understanding of the role and sphere of midwifery practice and learn how to effectively manage a range of emergency situations. You will gain insight into managerial and supervisory dimensions of midwifery practice and how institutional frameworks can support public safety and the post qualification education and professional development of midwives. In addition, with the support of a research supervisor, you will undertake a focussed student project on a specific area of interest.

ABOUT THE Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery

CAREERS
As the number one school of nursing and midwifery in London, we enjoy an excellent reputation producing outstanding clinicians and world leaders in specialist areas. Students who qualify from our programmes gain professional registration as a nurse or midwife respectively from the Nursing and Midwifery Council. With excellent employability from our programmes, many of our qualifying nurses gain employment in prominent London NHS Trusts, while others choose to work elsewhere in the UK and abroad. There is a varied choice of career destinations from hospitals to community/primary care, research to teaching, management to media. Whatever the chosen pathway, students will be well prepared to meet the challenges of a modern career in nursing and the complexities of tomorrow's healthcare. Midwives who graduate from King's are actively recruited by both national and international employers. Many are involved in innovative practices and others work as independent midwives. Many return for further graduate study in midwifery or women's health.

TEACHING STYLE
A comprehensive range of teaching and learning methods are used, each tailored to the particular area of study being undertaken, with simulation playing an increasingly significant role in clinical education. Formal lectures account for only a small proportion of the curriculum. As a School we aim to acknowledge the individuality of our students. Student-centred learning is pivotal to our philosophy and the teaching methods employed encourage and support self development and awareness through reflection on experience. We utilise practitioners, researchers and lecturers to deliver high quality research-based teaching.

STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMMES & ASSESSMENT
The programmes include an equal balance of theoretical learning and clinical placement with our partner healthcare providers including leading NHS Trusts together with private and voluntary organisations. Programmes are full-time and during clinical practice students work a shift pattern similar to that of the qualified nurse/midwife. A variety of coursework, written and practical exams are used to assess students. Clinical practice is also assessed.

LOCATION
The School is located in the heart of London on the Waterloo Campus on the South Bank of the river Thames. Close links are maintained with the major teaching hospitals and NHS Trusts across London as well as private healthcare providers. Nursing and midwifery students have wide-ranging and unique opportunities to gain experience in some of the most prominent hospitals in London, alongside other areas where healthcare is delivered. This affords students the opportunity to rehearse a wide range of skills, while applying their theoretical learning to practice situations, enabling them to progress their knowledge and understanding of the discipline. For more information about our partners please visit http://www.kcl.ac.uk/nursing/partners

Student profiles

Midwifery Studies with Registration BSc
Studying midwifery at King's College London is brilliant. The course is based on best practice, is stimulating and highly rewarding. I am very grateful to be working towards an internationally recognised midwifery qualification from such a world renowned school. As a student I feel well supported on the programme. The lecturers are excellent. Classes are vibrant, informative and highly engaging, which really facilitates learning. The school's library is state of the art, with excellent facilities, helpful staff and lots of available computers to use on site. The academic week is balanced between two days of clinical placement at our allocated hospital working with a mentor, two days of lectures, each at Waterloo and Guy's campus, and one day of learning practical, midwifery skills. I have enjoyed exploring such interesting topics as water births, birth physiology, place of birth and discussing in detail research studies related to midwifery. Integrated learning is also incorporated into the curriculum giving us the opportunity to interact with other health students from medicine, physiotherapy and nursing. King's is a fantastic place to study not only for its excellent reputation but also for being centrally located in one of the most exciting cities in the world. It provides a great study-life balance, having access to a first class education whilst enjoying an array of cultural and social experiences in the heart of London. Studying midwifery here has exposed me to many different cultures, beliefs and practices, which has been fascinating and has enriched my journey towards becoming a fully qualified midwife.
Midwifery Studies with Registration BSc
Studying at King's is a dream come true. I chose to study here as it has a world-class reputation and the types of midwifery experiences available in London are unlike any other place in the country. The King's Trust partners are some of the biggest in the UK and have specialist areas of expertise. In the course of your training you may care for babies born at 24 weeks, assist in a triplet delivery, see pioneering intra-uterine surgery, work on a case loading team caring for teenage mothers, work in a FGM clinic, attend homebirths; the opportunities are endless.

Our lecturers are inspirational and well-renowned in their fields but, above all, they are truly passionate about midwifery care and this translates into their teaching. Furthermore, the tutors will do everything in their power to help you with any issues you have, academic or otherwise.

The employment rate for student midwives at King's is one hundred per cent, which, I think, speaks volumes about the kind of education you receive here. I love every minute of it, making memories that will last a lifetime.
