Research Ethics at King's College London

All research involving human participants undertaken by staff or students of the College must have ethical approval.

Who should apply and what research is covered?

Any King's member of staff or student doing research involving healthy human participants. The term research should be taken in its broadest possible sense and includes questionnaires, observations and the use of materials derived from human participants as well as invasive or intrusive procedures. The re-use of personal data may also require ethical approval due to its sensitive nature or if individuals can be identified from it. Research raising any ethical issues with potential social or environmental implications may also require approval.

The only exception to this is when the research is being reviewed by an NHS research ethics committee.

Please note, you can only use data that was collected after ethical approval was granted. Any data collected prior to this date must not be used.

Where should I apply?

You can find out where you need to submit your application for ethical approval by going to Where to Apply.

Research involving human tissue:
Please note that the College has decided that research involving human tissue (as defined by the Human Tissue Act 2004) will from this point onwards require NHS ethical approval. Studies that have already been reviewed by a College Committee will retain their ethical approval from the College, and further approval from the NHS will not be required.

Studies with approval that require a modification to the ethical approval, must submit to an NHS ethics committee if the modification directly relates to the human tissue aspect this study. All other modifications can be submitted to the approving College committee.

If you are unclear on where to apply, please contact the Research Ethics Office.

A list of the local NHS committees can be found here. Should you wish to submit to one of those committees, you will need to request this when contact the Local London allocation Service (LLAS) to book in your application.

Social Care research funded by the Department of Health:
From this date onwards, all social care research funded by the Department of Health must apply to the Social Care Research Ethics Committee. Details of the meeting dates and application process can be found on the Committee website.
