Lipids, together with proteins and DNA, are the main building blocks of all living beings. Lipids are major constituents of the biological membranes that delimit cells and internal organelles, allowing subcellular compartmentalisation. They serve as platforms for cellular communication, signalling and metabolism. The diversification of membrane lipids was critical for the origin of life and for the development of biological complexity. Many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurological disorders and rare genetic diseases are associated with lipid dysfunction. In this Interest Group, we bring together scientists and clinicians from across the college to support, develop and champion work in this important area.
