Hire of Skeletons & Skulls

skeleton For reasons that will become apparent, certain parts of the body are required to be known in some detail, whereas other parts are less important. For this reason, it is essential for you to know the bones of any region before you start to dissect it. You can hire a skeleton or skull from the Anatomy Department on a first come first served basis, so that you can explore it for yourself and you can take this away with you so that you can have access to it when it suits you.

  • Dental students may hire a skull, when in their second year.
  • Medical students in their first year may hire a half skeleton.
  • Medical students in their second year may hire a skull and a half skeleton.
  • Physiotherapy students may hire a half skeleton.
  • Science students may hire a half skeleton.

The cost of the hire is £50; £30 of this will be refunded if the skeleton and/or skull is returned in the same state it was issued. The period of the hire will be ONE ACADEMIC YEAR and ALL material MUST be returned the week following the end of the summer examination period.

You will be allocated specific times at which you may collect skeletal material from the Osteology store in the basement of the Hodgkin Building, adjacent to the Lower Dissecting Room. Completion of appropriate paperwork and exchange of cash or a cheque (made payable to King’s College London) is all that is required.

In order that we are able to provide students with this service, and of course for the moral obligation, it is imperative that the material is returned intact. Students are warned that retention of this valuable human material will be viewed as a serious offence and likely to result in disciplinary action.

For further information, please contact Miss Kirsty Thomson, Technical Manager of the Dissecting Room.
