RAE 2008 – strength in depth
The Dental Institute has confirmed its position as the most influential centre of excellence in the UK for oral and dental research, following the publication of the outcome of the RAE 2008.With more than twice the number of researchers returned than any other UK dental school and an RAE profile of 30% 4*, the Institute has yet again set the standard for others to follow by maintaining the critical mass of internationally-competitive researchers necessary to pursue cutting-edge research.
The RAE profile includes 70% activity recognised as internationally excellent (30% 4*, 40% 3*) with 95% of the activity overall having been rated international from a total of 74 (68.46 FTE’s) members of staff returned. Young academics, recruited since the last RAE in 2001 make up over 20% of the return and illustrate the continued investment of the Institute in developing new talent and expertise in oral and dental research.
The Institute is committed to the translation of laboratory-based research to clinical practice in its uniquely large fusion of basic scientists and clinicians. This commitment, together with investment in the future of academic dentistry, serves to underpin the Institute’s integrated approach to excellence in its many, varied endeavours as the UK’s largest dental clinical academic centre, and integral element of the proposed King’s Health Partners academic health science centre.
