Dr Avijit Banerjee, Head of Pre-clinical Conservative Dentistry at the Dental Institute, has been appointed to a Visiting Chair in Restorative Dentistry at Oman Dental College.

Anthony Power, who recently completed his undergraduate dental programme, has won the 2009 University of London BDS Gold Medal. This is the eighth year in succession that a graduate of King’s College London Dental Institute has been awarded this highly prestigious prize.
27 July 2009 Dental Hygiene and Therapy Class of 2009
The Class of 2009 graduated from King’s School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy on 2 July. The diplomats in Dental Hygiene and Therapy are the last to graduate from King's under existing arrangements.
17 July 2009 First cohort of graduates for entry programme at King’s
The Dental Institute is very proud to graduate one of the first cohorts of students in the United Kingdom who undertook a bespoke four year programme in dentistry. The conventional time to study dentistry is five years.
16 July 2009 Class of 2009 graduation ceremony
Congratulations to all the final BDS Part 5 students who have graduated from King’s College London Dental Institute. The graduation ceremony was held on 2 July in Southwark Cathedral.
10 July 2009 Funding awarded for exciting new initiative
King's has been successful in the award of a £10M Wellcome Trust / Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council Medical Engineering Centre (MEC). This funding is to run for a period of five years with the Dental Institute being a significant contributor and beneficiary (£1M) of the research programme in the Centre.
1 July 2009 New London Dental Education Centre opens
The new state-of-the-art London Dental Education Centre (LonDEC) was officially opened yesterday at King’s by Ann Keen MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health Services in the presence of Dr Barry Cockcroft, Chief Dental Officer.

Over 80 delegates from 12 countries and four continents, including two Chief Dental Officers and seven Deans attended the 7th King’s College London Dental Institute Anglo-Italian Colloquium hosted by the Universita degli Studi di Brescia 7-10th May 2009.
13 May 2009 Dr Wouter Leyssen wins prestigious research award
Dr Wouter Leyssen was awarded the prestigious British Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry (BSSPD) 2009 research award. Wouter is currently studying for the College’s MSc in Prosthetic Dentistry. This is the second time in three years that a student on the programme has been awarded the prize.
5 May 2009 New journal launched by Dental Institute staff
A new journal aimed at social and behavioural scientists working in dentistry was launched by members of the Dental Institute at the most recent IADR conference in Miami.

Dr J A Cardoso, a student on the Prosthodontics MClinDent course, has been awarded 1st prize in the posters scientific competition of the ConsEuro 2009 for his poster titled, 'Improvement of the periodontal interface in restorative treatments.'

King’s Centre for International Child Oral Health and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a close working relationship on the Global Child Dental Health Taskforce’s leadership programme.

A state-of-the-art new mobile dental unit was inaugurated at the Michael Tippet Special Education Needs (SEN) School in Lambeth, South London on 27 February. The unit will be an integral part of the dental services offered by the Department of Community Special Care Dentistry (CSpCD) at King's College London Dental Institute.

Professor Stephen M Dunne has been appointed to the post of General Secretary of the European Federation of Conservative Dentistry (EFCD) by unanimous vote at the 8th General Assembly of the EFCD which took place on 11 March in Seville, Spain.

9 Mar 2009 King’s Health Partners accredited
King’s Health Partners has been formally accredited as one of the UK’s first Academic Health Sciences Centres (AHSCs). Five AHSCs have been approved by the international expert panel appointed by the Department of Health.
