Winners of Dental Alumni Awards 2009 announced

Professor Stephen Challacombe, Professor Thomas Lehner and Professor Nairn Wilson Professor Thomas Lehner CBE and Dr Brett Robinson have been recognised for their outstanding work achievements at the third annual Dental Alumni Awards. Hosted by the King’s College London GKT Dental Alumni Association, the two prestigious awards – the Alumnus of the Year Award and the Alumnus Distinguished Service Award – were announced at the GKT Alumni Dental Dinner on Friday 6 March.
Professor Thomas Lehner was presented with the Alumnus of the Year Award for his outstanding and continuing contribution to UK oral and dental research. Generations of students will be aware of his pioneering work in the dental caries vaccine, on the immunology of oral diseases and latterly on a mucosal vaccine against AIDS. He continues to attract considerable funding for his work and many of his PhD students are in positions of influence around the world. The prize is awarded to a person who qualified at one of the constituent Schools and who has achieved national and international distinction in any walk of life and brought credit to the profession, directly or indirectly, with particular emphasis on the last three years.

Professor Lehner commented: 'My major achievement was to cross the barrier between the Medical and Dental School, both in research and teaching over about 30 years. I was in charge of the emerging new scientific discipline of immunity in both Schools and was in a position to influence the development of immunology into a major medical and dental research area.'

The Alumnus Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr Brett Robinson. The award is intended to honour a long-serving member of staff who has made a significant contribution to the Dental Institute or one of its constituent Schools. Dr Robinson joined the staff at KCHMDS in 1975, having graduated from the Royal Dental Hospital Dental School. He has served King’s College London Dental Institute ever since as an enthusiastic teacher, especially with the introduction to the clinical practice course, as a leader in establishing the distance learning programmes and more latterly as the Director of Admissions for the Dental Institute. He has also made a significant contribution to service in the field of endodontics.

Nominations for the awards were sought from all dental alumni including current staff and the GKT Alumni Executive made the award from the list of nominations.
