Class of 2009 graduation ceremony

Graduation day Congratulations to all the final BDS Part 5 students who have graduated from King’s College London Dental Institute. The graduation ceremony was held on 2 July in Southwark Cathedral.

In attendance was the Principal, Professor Rick Trainor, who gave the opening address. Professor Nairn Wilson, Dean and Head of the Dental Institute, also addressed the graduating students and their families and friends.
This was a special year as the Dental Institute graduated one of the first cohorts of students in the United Kingdom who undertook a bespoke four year programme in dentistry. The conventional time to study dentistry is five years. By taking students who have already completed a high-level (2.1 or higher) degree in bioscience, they are exempted the first year of the programme. Along with the 176 students graduating with a BDS degree, a number of students were awarded PhDs, master’s degrees and Diplomas in Dental Hygiene and Therapy. The diplomats in Dental Hygiene and Therapy are the last to graduate from King's under existing arrangements.

The Dental Institute is also very proud of the students who won final year prizes, announced by Dr Mark Woolford, Director of Education, during the ceremony. The prizes are awarded annually by the Institute based on clinical and academic performance.
