King’s Anglo-Italian Colloquium goes global
Over 80 delegates from 12 countries and four continents, including two Chief Dental Officers and seven Deans attended the 7th King’s College London Dental Institute Anglo-Italian Colloquium hosted by the Universita degli Studi di Brescia 7-10th May 2009. The Plenary session theme was on global digital perspectives, with keynotes from Professor Johann de Vries, Dean of the Dental School in Adelaide, and Professor Dieter Schonwetter an Educational Specialist from the University of Manitoba in Canada. Their topics were “Delivering a Blended Learning Dental Curriculum 11000km Away” and “Imagining the Possibilities of Digital Dental Education – Critical Educational Components worth Considering” respectively. The Plenary also included fascinating talks by Professor Paola Ferroni from Curtin University in Australia “Benchmarking: Process, Utility & Outcome” Professor Sharon Grayden from the University of Michigan, “Second life: Virtual Scenarios for Learning” , Professor Arne Hensten and Sisko Huumanen from Tromso Dental School in Norway “Lights from the North” and Dr Brian Millar, Director of Distance Learning at King’s “Flexible Graduate Programmes – The vision”.
The afternoon session was devoted to a workshop on robotics and haptics (sense of touch) led by Professor Margaret Cox (Emerita Professor ICT in Education, King’s). The progress of the PHANTOM project (Personalised Haptics when Teaching with Online Media) was reported by Dr Jonathan San-Diego (King’s)with hands on experience with this and other robotics equipment that will support dental students in operative learning processes. An international focus was given by demonstrations from Hamburg, talks from Aachen University (Professor Jerome Rotgans) and Birmingham City University (Dr Bruce Elson). Prof Rotgans discussed the work of the Virtual Reality Department in Aachen and Bruce Elson the latest robotic enabled learning platforms.
A roundtable discussion forum was held on Saturday 9th May when the important achievements of the IVIDENT (International Virtual Dental School) were discussed. Demonstrations of the functional components and tools were given by John Cornforth of Tier 2 Consulting, and the e-content of the IVIDENT virtual library by George Bell, e-Learning Manager of IVIDENT. Roundtable discussions included important debates about quality assurance, provision of CPD, and support of developing countries. A report from the European Dental Students Association (EDSA) was given by Sami Stagnell, Past President of the Dental Society, King’s and highlighted the strong sense of involvement of the students in learning online.
The Colloquium had been preceded by a meeting of the International Advisory Board of IVIDENT chaired by Professor Ken Eaton by videoconference from UK. This was followed by an online Treasure Hunt led remotely by Professor Frank Rennie from the University of Highlands and Islands and concluded by a visit to a local vineyard and the City of Cremona – the home of violin making. We would particularly like to acknowledge the extraordinary hospitality shown to us by the Dean of the Dental School in Brescia, and Chief Dental Officer of Italy, Professor Corrado Paganelli and his staff and students who made this Colloquium an especial success.
Further information can be obtained from the IVIDENT website and on the PHANTOM website.
