New high-spec dental education centre to open in London
A new London dental education centre (LonDEC) has been given the go ahead as a partnership between the London Deanery and King’s College London Dental Institute. The funding has been provided by NHS London as part of their investment in programmes of education to train all members of the dental team and also to drive up clinical standards and improve clinical leadership via continuous personal and professional development. The dedicated, high-specification facility will be located at the Franklin Wilkins Building, Waterloo Campus, King’s College London, which is just a short walk away from Waterloo mainline station, and is scheduled to be operational from May 2009. The Centre will comprise a dental skills training room equipped with 26 phantom head stations, 8 of which will include operating microscopes. There will be cutting edge clinical simulation facilities, a dedicated lecture room catering for up to 45 delegates, as well as break out rooms. In addition, LonDEC will have a full immersion simulation suite for team training in both infection control and the management of medical emergencies.
LonDEC will be available as an education and training facility for commercially run lecture and hands-on training, as well as being the centre for some of the Masters degree programmes run by King’s College London Dental Institute. The London Deanery will provide hands on training in cross infection control and medical emergencies for all their trainees as well as CPD courses for the dental team from the LonDEC centre.
Elizabeth Jones, Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry at the London Deanery, said: “London Deanery greatly looks forward to collaboratively creating new opportunities for hands-on training and enhanced continuous development for dental professionals. Key skills training to be delivered at the new LonDEC facility in crisis management, patient safety in medical emergencies and infection control, supports London Deanery’s aims to improve patient safety in dental practices across London.”
Professor Nairn Wilson, Dean and Head of King's College London Dental Institute, said: “The Dental Institute is delighted to be working in partnership with the London Deanery to create a state-of-the-art education centre to enhance hands-on training and related continuing professional development for all members of the dental team. It is hoped that LonDEC will be a platform on which to develop and build innovations in lifelong learning of immediate practical relevance to the clinical practice of dentistry.”
