Salvatore Sauro recognised by Italian Society
Salvatore Sauro, a graduate research student in the Biomaterials, Biomimetics & Biophotonics (B3) Research Group at the Dental Institute, has been awarded the first classification prize by the Italian Society of Conservative Dentistry (SIDCO) at the SIDCO Roma 2009 meeting for his presentation titled, ‘Effects of an alternative dentine pre-treatment: a microtensile and confocal-immunohistochemical study.’ He received a cash reward of 2,000 Euros.Supervised by Dr Francesco Mannocci and Professor Timothy Watson in the B3 Research Group, the aim of the study was to reduce hybrid layer degradation created with simplified dentine adhesives by using two different methods to condition the dentine surface. The results of the study showed that these dentine-conditioning procedures improve the resistance of the resin-dentine bond sites to chemical degradation and may result in more durable resin-dentine bonds. The project has been developed with the help of Professor H. Pashley from the Medical College of Georgia, USA and Professor Manuel Toledano and Raquel Osorio from the University of Granada, Spain.
Earlier in the year, Salvatore’s research was published in the Journal of Dentistry, and it was this paper that the presentation was based upon.
Salvatore comments: ‘It was a great experience for me to go on the stage and speak in front of many people who were surprised by the beauty of the confocal microscopy. All the members of the SIDCO congratulated us on our high level of research.’
The SIDCO is a non-profit organization that promotes the study and scientific research in the field of conservative dentistry in order to contribute to the improvement of scientific knowledge.
