Dr Avijit Banerjee recognised for teaching excellence

Dr Avijit Banerjee The King’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2008/9 in the Dental Institute has been won by Dr Avijit Banerjee, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Conservative Dentistry. The winners from each School were announced at the College Education Committee in May.

These annual awards, now in their seventh year, provide students studying on undergraduate and taught graduate programmes with an opportunity to recognise teaching staff from each of the College’s nine Schools of study. Schools can either give the award to one person or divide it, and one award of £1,000 will be made per School.
Dr Banerjee commented: ‘Having been nominated before, I am greatly honoured and humbled that the BDS students and College have bestowed this award upon me this year. Teaching bright, intelligent undergraduates is a privilege and a
challenge, which I enjoy facing on a daily basis!’

A second year BDS student, who nominated Dr Banerjee for the Teaching Excellence Award, said: ‘Dr Banerjee has stood out from the rest due to his ‘unique’ teaching style, enthusiasm, passion and energy to deliver the best education possible. Teaching is an art that I believe he has mastered. Not only does he explain what he says with examples and analogies, but he also inspires, which is a quality outstanding individuals possess. I recall him mentioning at the start of the year that he wants us tall to be ‘high-end dentists’ and he has done everything possible to remain true to his words.’
