Academic recognised with key award
Professor Tom Lehner CBE has been awarded by the Society for Research in Rheumatology of Turkey the 'Behçet Award' for outstanding contribution to the understanding and management of Behçet’s disease. The award will be presented to Professor Lehner at the forthcoming Conference at the International Society for Behçet’s Disease in London.
Behçet's disease is named after a Turkish dermatologist. The clinical manifestations consist of recurrent ulcers in the mouth and genitals, skin lesions, uveitis leading to blindness, arthritis, neurological and vascular abnormalities. It is also known as the 'Silk route disease' and as the name suggests the disease is prevalent in Japan, China and countries bordering the Mediterranean. Professor Lehner has contributed to the basic understanding of the cellular immune mechanism of Behcet’s disease.
