President of research group appointment

Professor Tim Newton Professor Tim Newton, Head of the Oral Health, Workforce & Education Research Group at the Dental Institute, has been appointed President of the Behavioural, Epidemiological and Health Services Research Group (BEHSR) of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR).
In the role, Professor Newton will ensure the Group’s conference contributions are coordinated with the central committee, advise on appropriate invited speakers and symposia content, and award prizes for distinguished contributions to the field.

The Group has currently a membership of 500 professionals from multiple disciplines. In the coming year, Professor Newton hopes to expand the membership of the Group, which will include providing additional membership benefits. He also hopes to identify methods for supporting dental research in developing countries through the appointment of research mentors and provision of small research grants.

The purpose of BEHSR, which is one of several groups of the IADR, is to promote and encourage research in the behavioral and social sciences and dental health services. These scientific areas include research on professions and public education, epidemiology of oral diseases and their prevention, behavioral studies of pain and anxiety, utilization of dental services, clinical decision analysis, evaluation of alternative treatments, delivery systems and their effects on oral health, as well as other subjects.

In 2007, Professor Newton received the Giddon Award for distinguished research in the behavioural sciences, awarded by the Behavioural Sciences and Health Services Research Group of the IADR.
