Dental student sings live on national TV

Eschoir singing Sex on Fire on Don't Stop Believing, August 2010. A dental student has starred in Channel 5’s new live talent show Don’t Stop Believing. Tomos Lavery, 19, and his group Eschior sang Sex on Fire by King’s of Leon. Although they didn’t get voted through to the final, they received encouraging comments from the celebrity judges. The show was watched by over of 1 million viewers.
Don’t Stop Believing is hosted by Emma Bunton and judged by Anastacia, Duncan James, Tamzin Outhwaite and Charles “Chucky” Klapow.

Eschoir were approached by Channel 5 to take part in the show, following performances at the 02 Arena, Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and on the Millennium Stadium pitch during the rugby’s Six Nations Championship,

Tomos, who is entering his second year of dentistry at King’s, says: ‘Don’t Stop Believing was a truly fantastic experience and singing Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon live on national TV sent a huge buzz through the group. We hope to use this experience to take us forward this year with future events including a gig with Lesley Garrett in December and Cor Cymru choir competition in Wales.’

Eschoir was set-up on social networking sites to create a young male vocal group in the capital with a new, fresh, and contemporary sound. There is a mix of members within the group. Students sing alongside city workers, IT technicians, lawyers, teachers, and actors and there is a cosmopolitan feel to the choir with members from Brazil, Poland, Italy, France, Cyprus, New Zealand, South Africa as well as England.

Tomos adds: ‘In a very short space of time we’ve been building a repertoire of pop classics from the likes of Snow Patrol, Take That, Kings of Leon, Coldplay and Lady Gaga, but always with the distinctive Eschoir twist.’

Tomos is also a member of All the King’s Men, an all male cappella group, established in September last year by freshers at King’s. The group has a distinctive vocal style with tight harmonies and original arrangements and which, together with their own fun choreography, add a new and exciting dimension to the many popular songs that they sing.

All the King’s Men have recently released their debut eponymous album and made their Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut last month.

‘We had great support from the College, and with fantastic reviews from both reviewers and our audiences, we hope to be back for longer next year,’ says Tomos.
