Teacher Education Day

Teacher Education Day The Dental Institute staged its annual Teacher Education Day on Friday 8 January. At the time, the South East of England was deep in snow and we were concerned that staff would not be able to make it. Yet in the event 130 full and part-time members of staff benefited from a series of lectures and discussions.
The day was opened by the Dean and Head of the Dental Institute, Professor Nairn Wilson, and the first session included a presentation on Threshold Concepts by Dr Ian Kinchin of the King’s Learning institute and Dr Lyndon Cabot. This was followed by a fascinating and informative introduction to the new University of Portsmouth Dental Academy by the clinical lead Dr David Radford and Professor Stephen Dunne. Mr Barry Quinn then comprehensively outlined the role of the Teaching and Learning Coordinator and the educational qualifications available to staff.

After coffee, Professor Fraser McDonald gave an update on External Affairs and Postgraduate Education. There have been significant changes of late to the support services available to students and Mr Eric Whaites outlined how and why these changes have to take place. The morning finished with a short presentation by Dr Lyndon Cabot on the new consultant led Restorative Treatment Planning clinics.

Following an excellent lunch, the afternoon session began with the break out sessions for the individual departments. These were an opportunity to discuss important local issues and were led by the individual heads of departments.

Then Ms Angela Farmer, the General Manager for the Dental Directorate at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), discussed key NHS trust issues. The infection control lecture, presented by Mr Chris Dickinson, was a key feature of the session, which not only reinforced the principles of infection control but Chris also gave a detailed overview of the management of sharps injuries.

Also during the afternoon, BDS students Salvatore Sauro and Najam Imam displayed their poster presentations for the BDA/Dentsply Student Clinician Research Programme 2010 competition. The judges selected Najam imam's poster and he will represent the Dental Institute in the final round of the competition at the BDA.

The main aim of the day was to promote discussion of teaching matters relating to all departments within the Institute. The event was also an opportunity to meet colleagues from different disciplines and sites.
