Gymnastics success for dental student
Josh Sharpling, a second year BDS student at the Dental Institute, finished 5th on the Pommel Horse at the 2010 Men’s Artistic Gymnastics British Championships, held in New College, Leicester from 5-7 November.Josh, 19, beat gymnasts who are in the top level of the British National Squad after qualifying for the final Masters event, which involves the top gymnasts from the national competition.
He now hopes to represent the University of London in February 2011 at the British University Championships, and following on from this, hopes to be selected to compete for Great Britain in the World Student Games in 2011 and/or 2013.
Speaking after his Championship success, Josh said: ‘After not competing at the National level for two years, I was very pleased how well I competed. My aim before the competition was to qualify for the final, so to do this, and come 5th was great. It is sometimes difficult to combine training, competing and studying, however the Dental Institute has been very supportive in helping me.’
Nairn Wilson, Dean and Head of the Dental Institute commented: ‘This is a tremendous achievement with the prospect of lots more to come, including hopefully the World Student Games in 2011 and/or 2013. The Institute is delighted to support Josh as a gymnastic champion.’
To help with income to support his training, Josh works as a gymnastics coach. He is also currently a member of the Elite Athlete Scheme at King’s, and last academic year received £300 in support towards his training, coaching, competition entry and travel fees. The Scheme is looking to support him to a similar level this year.
‘The Dental Institute is also working to establish a mechanism to support Josh and other dental students in a similar position,’ said Dr Mark Woolford, Director of Education at the Institute.
Josh needs to raise £2500 to enable him to compete nationally next year. If you would like to offer support, please email Josh.
