Dental education fellowship launched

Professor Nairn Wilson and Mr Derek Willmot (Dean, Faculty of Dental Surgery, The Royal College of Surgeons of England) Representatives of King’s College London, The Royal College of Surgeons of England and the family of the late Dr John McLean met recently to launch the John W McLean Fellowship.

Dr John McLean was a restorative dentist and materials scientist of great standing whose world- class research and development work produced products, which are of enormous continuing benefit to dentistry and the public throughout the world.
Dr McLean graduated from Guy’s Dental Hospital and had close associations with The Royal College of Surgeons of England as a Fellow in Dental Surgery.  On his death he bequeathed legacies to both organisations.  The executors of the estate and John’s family expressed the wish to have a mutual understanding between the two organisations to develop a joint annual award which will be applied for the further education of general dental practitioners and development of general practice and dental surgery.

The income from the funds, bequested to the two Colleges, will provide bursaries for postgraduate students who are Members of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of The Royal College of Surgeons of England to study at King’s College London Dental Institute, and to support their education through travel and to attend conferences and international research seminars or period of studies with the aim of promoting and nurturing research and advances in dental materials science.  The student to be awarded the Fellowship each year will be selected by a committee comprising the Dean of the Dental Institute and the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery or their nominees.

A notice requesting applications for the first John McLean Fellowship will be placed in the press and the websites of both organisations during 2011.
