Student receives prestigious research award

Dr Salvatore Sauro Dr Salvatore Sauro has been awarded the prestigious 2010 Ralph Phillips Student Research Award from the Academy of Operative Dentistry. The Dental Institute received a cash reward of $5,023 to support his project entitled, ‘The development of biomimetic/bioactive bonding procedures: dentin re-mineralization induced by the interaction of bioactive glass with adhesive techniques.’
Salvatore is currently a first year student studying for his BDS degree at the Dental Institute and also works within the Biomaterials, Biomimetics & Biophotonics Research Group, having completed a PhD in Dental Biomaterials. He says the inspiration for this project is based on the fact that although re-mineralization of enamel lesions is predictably achieved, the ability to re-mineralize dentine is still conjectural.

‘This is fundamental to the long-term degradation of the resin-based adhesive bond with dentine,’ explains Salvatore. ‘Much of my previous work has looked at the physical characteristics of this interface and the aim of this study is to take the work further by bringing in the exciting concepts of biomimetics and bioactive materials.’

He will present a table clinic reporting the findings of his project at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Operative Dentistry to be held in Chicago, 24-25 February 2011.

The Ralph Phillips Student Research Award is for students wanting to carry out research related to Operative Dentistry. The application consists of a protocol outlining the background, aim/hypothesis to be tested, the methodology to be employed, a time schedule, budget sheet and the expected outcome of the study. Professor Timothy Watson, Director of Research and Head of the Biomaterials, Biomimetics & Biophotonics Research Group, supported the application as Salvatore's mentor.

Tilly Peters, the chairperson of the Research Committee of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, commented:I congratulate Salvatore and his team on the excellence of his application for the 2010 Ralph Phillips Student Research Award. Salvatore is a most worthy winner of this most prestigious award.'
