Aesthetic Dentistry MSc

Founded in 1829, King’s College London is ranked as one of the world’s top 25 universities (Times Higher HQ World University Rankings, 2009), and remains one of the UK’s most prestigious university teaching establishments.

The Dental Institute at King’s College is at the forefront of many cutting edge developments, not only in clinical research but also in the respective fields of dental education. As pioneers of teaching dentistry by a blended learning approach, the college has now over 20 years of experience in assisting professionals meet their continuing postgraduate needs with minimal disruption to work and family commitments.

The Masters in Aesthetic Dentistry programme was first launched in January 2010. The course aims to provide dental practitioners with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide high quality functional dental restorations with optimal aesthetic value. Whilst the onus of the course is primarily on providing dental care where there is a clinical need to restore oral health and function, cosmetic techniques such as tooth whitening and facial techniques such as the administration of botox and dermal fillers will also be covered.

The programme Director, Professor Brian Millar, has a wealth of experience in delivering postgraduate courses at Masters Level through the process of blended learning. With his team of dedicated tutors, including Dr. Subir Banerji (Deputy Director), he has helped many hundreds of dental graduates, both nationally and internationally to achieve their postgraduate goals, to broaden their horizons and their delivery of dental care.

This part-time innovative programme takes 3 years to complete.
Each module contains 6 units, with each unit having a designated author. Authors have been carefully selected to provide prospective students with the highest quality of educational resources, utilising a variety of contemporary methods of delivering educational material. Contributing authors include some of the most eminent dental operators in world dentistry, both from the UK and internationally, such Dr. Ronald Jackson (USA), Dr. Jonathan Levine (USA) Dr. Sarkis Nalbandian (Australia), Dr. Ashok Sethi, Professor Nairn Wilson, Dr. Martin Kelleher, Dr. Linda Greenwall, Dr. Ian Buckle, Dr. Serpil Djemal, Professor Steven Dunne, Dr. Avijit Banerjee, Mr. William Sharpling (all UK) and many more.

Programme summary

The programme covers techniques and education to manage the increasing demands of this form of dental care, not generally taught at BDS level. The course covers a broad range of treatments from non-invasive to full preparation, for both hard and soft tissues. The course also covers marketing and ethical issues.

The mode of delivery, which combines online and face-to-face components, has been designed to enable dentists to remain in dental practice while training, allowing them to earn and establish a dental practice using skills learnt on the programme. The programme is particularly suited to UK and overseas dentists at any stage in their professional careers. Two residential courses of approximately 9 days duration, in year one and two, are held at LonDEC, King’s College London.

LonDEC is a recently opened post-graduate teaching facility that provides delegates with some of the finest hands-on dental teaching facilities available in the UK and Europe. The hands-on teaching sessions provide the supporting face-to-face tuition in clinical skills. Designated tutors are present during the residential programmes to provide expert guidance to students on complex dental procedures, of which they have abundant experience and knowledge.

‘I’m very impressed with LonDec. Excellent facilities and state of the art technology. I feel lucky to get to learn in such a place.’

The course has been designed to provide theory, support and discussion groups by online training, using a dedicated virtual learning environment.

Students receive regular on-line tutorials using MegaMeeting, with expert teachers on subjects including treatment planning, occlusion, tooth wear, planning of combined fixed and removable prosthodontics and implants in the aesthetic zone.

The five modules can be studied at your own pace over the three years.

All students will also receive an inclusive ‘restorative starter pack’ worth $1,000 which contains a diverse blend of superior quality restorative materials and instruments (many of which are used during the residential course held in London), to allow them to effectively practice many of the new techniques which will be acquired during the course.

Programme format

The first three modules are assessed by a formal written examination held once a year, normally in October, either in London or, for overseas students, at centres in the student’s country of residence. The clinical requirements of the course are assessed via submitted case work.

The marks from two assignments from each module will count towards a student’s final grade. Year 3 is assessed principally on the basis of a 10,000 word final report.

Students are also required to complete a number of treatment cases, presented in a video-graphic format, as evidence of their clinical competency.

‘Excellent, couldn’t ask for a more prepared, well-presented course.’
