Programme summary
The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate extended knowledge, understanding and advanced skills in the treatment of patients requiring prosthetic facial rehabilitation. The course will cover a broad range of treatments for replacement of missing hard and soft tissues using both traditional and advanced digital technologies. The course will also include a specific module on the psychological and social support required in facial rehabilitation and will cover communication, counselling skills and an appreciation of the psychosocial effects of surgical treatment for those living with head and neck cancer and facial disfigurement.
The mode of delivery which combines online and face-to-face components has been designed to enable Maxillofacial Prosthetists to remain in clinical practice while training, allowing them to earn and establish a clinical practice using skills learnt on the programme. The programme will be attractive to UK and overseas Maxillofacial Prosthetists, Anaplastologists and overseas Prosthodontists at any stage in their professional careers. Two residential courses, one of 7 days and the other of 10 days duration, in year one and two, at one of our training centres will provide the supporting face-to-face tuition in clinical skills. The training centres are London and Pune in India.
The course has been designed to provide theory, support and discussion groups by online training using a dedicated virtual learning environment.
The six modules can be studied at your own pace over the three years.
Programme format and assessment
The first two modules are completed in year one. Module 3 (Clinical practice) is undertaken over the three years and is assessed via submitted case work. Module 4 (Biomaterials) and module 5 (Psychology) are completed in year 2. Module 6 in year three will be assessed principally on the basis of the report.
In the first two years modules are assessed by a formal written examination (60 per cent of year mark) held once a year normally in October either in London or, for overseas students, at centres in the student’s country of residence.
Assignments also count towards the final assessment. Two assignments from each of modules one and two and four assignments from each of modules four and five will be taken into account.
