Our current PhD student Wendy Burke gave a seminar on 24th March on the topic ‘Myth, memory and re-writing the past in film: The shifting image of resistance and collaboration in Dutch films about World War Two from the 1960s and 1970s’.
The seminar addressed key aspects of her PhD research into the representation of war in Dutch films from the period 1962 to 1986 - although the seminar itself focused on films from the 1960s and 1970s. It traced the connection between shifts in Dutch public opinion over the post-war decades - towards resistance, collaboration, family life, Dutch identity and the image of the occupiers - and changes in the depiction of these themes in subsequent feature films.
The presentation was followed by a question and answer session about the presentation, plus any general questions the students had about life as a PhD student. There was an informal opportunity after the session to ask any questions about MA internships in television-related fields.
