CMCI Singers Concert
The CMCI Singers gave a pre-Christmas concert at the strand campus on 14th December. £50 was raised in aid of Children in Need. Thanks to all involved!

This was the provocative question asked at a workshop in Sydney , Australia at which CMCI’s Rosalind Gill gave the opening keynote.

Asian Cultural Industries research seminar
CMCI will hold a research seminar on 24th November on cultural policy in Singapore. Dr Lorraine Lim will examine recent trends of Singaporean government’s arts policy during the last ten years, with a particular reference to its attempt to brand Singapore as ‘Global City of the Arts’.

United Nations Gender Equality forum (from CCI blog)
Professor Rosalind Gill of CMCI has taken part in a prestigious ‘expert brainstorm’ to discuss gender equality and media stereotypes, in a joint initiative of the UN and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

Ros Gill and Andy Pratt (KCL) organised a special one day conference along with Mark Banks and Stephanie Taylor (OU) on ‘The future of Cultural Work’ that took place in London on Monday June 7th, 2010. The event was a collaboration between the ESRC research centre CRESC, Manchester University and the Open University, and KCL. The programme is available here.

Cities group
The 2010 Cities Group Annual lecture was held on Thursday May 13th, from 1730 to 1900, and was delivered by Professor Jamie Peck on the topic of 'Creative City Limits'. His lecture was a critique of the idea of creative cities and its applications to policy and practice.

Cultural and political historian Dr Harvey G. Cohen's new book was released in mid-May. Duke Ellington's America draws on Ellington's personal documents at the Smithsonian Institution to explore previously untold details of Ellington’s life and career.

Ross Book
Professor Rosalind Gill in the Centre for Culture, Media and Creative Industries Research was awarded the International Gender and Language Association’s 2010 prize for her book Gender and the Media (Polity Press). This is a a bi-annual prize that recognises ‘the most outstanding scholarship on gender, language and communication’.

Marketing and Social Media in the Cultural and Creative Industries took place Thursday 18th March 6:30-8pm, Franklin-Wilson Building room G.73.  This event gave hints and tips for how to market yourself using social media - important advice for everyone looking to develop a career in the Cultural and Creative Industries.

Council of Europe
CMCI professor addressed Council of Europe.
Rosalind Gill, Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at CMCI, gave a keynote address to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg as part of an event to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Fashion seminar
New arrivals at CMCI. In January and February we were delighted to welcome several newcomers to CMCI. Professor Rosalind Gill took up her role as Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis in January. Warsan Ali started as Internship & Communications Officer on February 8th. There were also four new visiting researchers to CMCI and two new PhD students.

The launch of a new international seminar series on sexualisation and culture, was funded by ESRC, and led by CMCI's Professor Rosalind Gill. The first event was on February 5th at the Institute of Education, addressing 'what is sexualisation'?
