English Department Doctoral Seminars

Sky The Doctoral Seminar is conceived as a forum for developing not just a research culture but an intellectual community among incoming PhD students.  Each year, one or two members of faculty will structure a fortnightly discussion series prompted by reflections on modes of reading and writing.  Students will be encouraged to select and circulate the piece of criticism that they have found most influential, or that they would most like to emulate, as the basis for a group conversation.

The Seminar will address the practical aspects of writing a doctoral dissertation from a theoretical viewpoint, focussing upon extrapolation, cross-currents, connections across projects, periods and methodologies, emphasizing the possibilities of cross-fertilisation and creative synchronicity within a collaborative research community.

This semester the Doctoral Seminar will be lead by Dr Jane Elliott and Dr Lara Shalson.  We will seek to provide a friendly and informal environment in which to reflect upon one’s own work and to learn from that of others.  Reading shall not exceed one essay or excerpt (around 30 pages) per session.
